Stars who died at 27
So many premature deaths in the history of popular music, and perhaps none as prominent and myth-ridden, untimely and tragic, as the "27 club", that group of stars who had in common that they all died at that young age. The term was first used when Kurt Cobain died in 1994, shooting himself at 27. Most people immediately think of Jim, Jimi, and Janis, who all three died within a short time-span, 1970-1971. Before that there was Brian Jones, and going way back, Robert Johnson. Add Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, founding member of Grateful Dead, and lastly, Amy Winehouse, and it becomes clear just how much was lost when they died. Kurt Cobain's mother called it the "stupid club". She warned her son not to join the stupid club, perhaps she could see where things were headed.

Sure other age groups have premature deaths, too, but I think the reason why 27 is singled out is because of the fame of the deceased stars coupled with the fact that they died that young. What set it off was the Jim-Jimi-Janis spate.

It's hardly surprising that those three died young given their lifestyles. The fact that they were the same age is coincidental.

Didn't what Kurt Cobain's mum called "that stupid club" thing start with Brian Jones?

Of course it's coincidental. I am merely pointing out that, with the other deaths added on, that particular age has embedded itself in the collective unconscious. I did not make up that term.

I know you didnt make up the term. It's just journalism trying to hang a hat on a story.
