I love this flick ... the respect that Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier have for each other shines through in their characters of Chief Gillespie and Virgil Tibbs. No matter how many times I see this movie, I tear up at the end when Gillespie carries Tibbs suitcase to the train and bids him good-bye.

“I will remember Rod Steiger as long as I live,” said Poitier recalling their 1967 work experience. ... And now, Rod Steiger. We are losing all the lions in the arena!” Jewison said, “I tried to put Rod in every picture I made after 'In the Heat of the Night.'

Thanks for the heads up on the podcast.
I'll never tire of this. Its a masterclass, the minor characters add subtlety and nuance, it LOOKS fantastic and the tension is sustained. I think the scene with Endicott is the moral heart of it, exposing prejudices in us all, regardless of what is right or wrong. Its not perfect though. For me, the ending is rushed and unsatisfactory, apart from the final scene.
