Prog Goons (and Jumper K) ONLY

Postby C » 07 Jul 2019, 16:33

I have just been listening to Selling England and decided that if push came to shove I'd go for Genesis over Yes.

[Okay, I could have said Genesis over ------ but I didn't - it's Yes]

You...?

Tough, went for Yes. "Selling England" is my least favourite Genesis album from the Gabriel era, spoiling a great run. Find it safe and contrived. From the debut up to Going for the one, a marvellous run ( although I'm only including sides 1 and 4 of Topographic )

My brain says Yes but my heart says Genesis

Up until 1982.
Then it's Yes all the way by that is largely by default
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

Easy win for Genesis chez moi.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

To make an informed choice I'd have to listen to Yes. I've only really listened to Going For The One, can't say I was that impressed.

Gabriel era Genesis is one of my prog flavors.

I don't mind a bit of Yes but I'd rather listen to Kansas. And there's not a whole lot I rank Kansas ahead of.

I'd rather listen to Yes than Styx, but I don't want to listen to Styx at all. I guess I rank Yes near the bottom rung of the bands I kind of like. I don't own any of their albums, and I don't feel the need to, but I might turn up the radio if one of their songs I like came on.

I refuse to be pigeonholed so I'm crashing the prognest!

I like two Genesis songs, the one with a wardrobe in it and Ripples, and I don't like anything by Yes. However, a couple of Yes members seem quite nice while Phil Collins is the annoyed man's annoying man.

Hmm.

Genesis edge it.
Bugger off.

Okay, let's be more clinical about this.

How many great Genesis albums?

Trespass, NC, Fox, Selling, Lamb, Trick of, W&W

How many great Yes albums?

TYA, Close to, Fragile, Relayer, Going for.

I make it 7-5 in Genesis' favour

oooof factor 1
Trespass
Duke (yes one non Hackett/ Gabriel album)

oooof factor 2

Trick of

oooof factor 3(higher the number the better)
NC

Not sure whether I'm a Prog Goon or Jumper K, but I'm at least a little bit of each, so...

There are a few Genesis tracks that I like a lot. I admire Lamb, but find it a bit unwieldy. "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" is great, but I find the rest of the album pales after it. Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot are fine when they're on, but I never think about them otherwise. Phil needs to shut up 'n play his drums, which he does a much better job of in Brand X.

There are only two Yes albums that I need to have as part of my life - The "Yes" album and "The Yes Album" - but that's two more than Goldalming's finest.

I love Genesis dearly, but my vote definitely goes to Yes. For me. their run from The Yes Album though to Going For The One (and possibly as far as Drama), outweighs the Genesis run from Nursery Cryme though to Duke. It’s very close though and I’m just glad I don’t have choose. Tales From Topographic Oceans Vs. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway: now that’s an almost impossible choice. I refuse to make it.

Drama is an excellent album.

I was one of those Yes fans at the time that wrote it off due to, in particular, Jon Anderson's absence

Foolish lad - it rocks!

Yes, it rocks...

And it’s not all about Machine Messiah either, which, you have to say, is one monster of a tune.

Into The Lens is my second favourite on the album.

I have been playing it a lot lately and I just adore this track:

This 'flat' sound of the tubs is lovely!

...and of course Squires' great bass solo
