It's a weird world indeed, when "Neon Lights" is the definitive Kraftwerk song. "Hall of Mirrors" and "Ruckzuck" have been shamefully treated.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Well it is the one voters like best, rather than the definitive song. It appeared in every list, and was in the top 5 of 5 lists. A vote to pick the song most representative of their work would probably throw up a different song (although radioactivity, number 2 here, may well be in for a shout).

But the top nine includes all their most famous songs except numbers and the model, which is logical. Compare to the Queen poll, where Brighton Rock came third.

It wasn't in every list, I can assure you of that. I get the point, it was more a comment on the nature of BCB, I guess, that a fairly un-Kraftwerky song (imo) is the clear favourite. It seems to me that it wouldn't likely be top of any other wide grouping of kraftwerk fans. A lesser track, from a slightly lesser album.

It was in every list. Even you had it at number 15.

I'm somewhat surprised at how high Showroom Dummies is on the list and very pleased to see Europe Endless so high.

The Guardian's List of best Kraftwerk songs doesn't feature Neon Lights at all (no Radioactivity either) and has a very surprising choice at no.1

Strange list, not sure its meant to be in order, perhaps just the ten best track.
Really strange to include the track Régéneration as its only 1.16 sec long!?

Ach, I don't know, just that the majority opinion tends towards the more melodic, and the less experimental. Kraftwerk, I tend to think of being more sonically adventurous, whereas "Neon Lights" feels quite aimless and insubstantial once it's got its vocal hook out of the way. It seems a really odd choice to highlight as the best Kraftwerk song, from an admittedly small voting electorate. I figured it was comment-worthy, anyway.

I'm not sure in what way Neon Lights is any more or less experimental than anything else they recorded after 1974.
It is an aural cityscape.
It evokes a night time metropolis 40 years ago.
It sounds as essential to me now as it did then - and I did buy it as a new release on a 12" luminous vinyl single in 1978 - and I suspect that the reason it was chosen so often and placed so high in so many of those lists is because of the quality of its composition and form.
What you find "aimless and insubstantial" in the instrumental coda is the very thing I find most fascinating about it
It's richly evocative and has a weirdly narcotic feel.
As I said on page one, before the votes were even all in, it was obvious what would win the poll, simply because it is their richest, most picturesque and most substantial composition/performance.

"A lesser track, from a slightly lesser album" ?
Right you are :?
