Elton John Albums that I've never heard

Postby trans-chigley express » 26 Jun 2019, 05:58

After watching (and enjoying) the movie Rocket Man I dug out some of my EJ albums that I haven't played in years and realised that I don't actually have very many, just 4 and Greatest Hits collection. The ones I have are Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic - all good though GYBR is a little patchy. So that's quite a lot I've never even heard. I wouldn't mind adding a few more so which of this lot are worth having? (not interested in anything after 78):

Empty Sky
Elton John
Honky Chateau
Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player
Caribou
Rock of the Westies
Blue Moves
A Single Man

For me it would be 'Don't Shoot Me.....' and Blue Moves, although I think Blue Moves is unlikely to get many other votes. Some of the others you mention, and I think I have all of them, are more highly regarded but those two are the ones I would play more often from your list.

Same for me, plus Elton John. Blue Moves is one of his very best.

There is a certain collection currently being compiled in a certain place if you are feeling a bit coughy.

The self titled album is one of his very greatest - an absolute must have.

Empty Sky, Honky Chateau & Don't Shoot Me have some fine moments but are (typically for Elton) very unbalanced.

I struggle with virtually all of his catalogue past Captain Fantastic, but I'll throw in "Songs From The West Coast" from around the turn of the century - it's got some cracking good tunes including "I Want Love" "This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore" and the wonderful "American Triangle".

Nicotine, valium, vicadin, marijuana, ecstasy, and alcohol -

Ive always had a soft spot for both "Caribou" and "Rock of the Wastes" - objectively both are far from his greatest work but there are still real gems on both, like "I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford) "and I just love the production on both, just about anything from that era produced by Gus Dudgeon is real ear candy. I think "Caribou" was bashed out in something like ten days. Both are generally ignored but are worth a listen or three.

Another vote for Blue Moves. My favourite, a hidden gem. Rock of the Westies is also strong despite being rather atypical.

I need to give Blue Moves another listen, never really connected it with first time around.

I've always thought of Blue Moves as a cracking single album masquerading as an overblown double.

Agreed.

(Idol is probably my favourite EJ track.)

I listened to his first two albums on youtube today. Empty Sky was better than I was expecting but seemed to lack any of the magic that was to come later. The title track and Skyline Pigeon are good though.

The self-titled follow up is a big step up, a very nice album indeed. This is one I should get.

I'll check out others.

Too low for zero, even if it is after 1978.

O Lucky Man.

I don't like the sound of his voice, can't quite explain exactly what and have no wish to inflict my ears to any to find out. It's definitely his voice I dislike, he has written several very pleasant melodies.

I tend to agree -- just love about half the songs. Apparently it's EJ's favorite.

I bought Blue Moves a few months back and played the first record last night. There were a few nice moments, but it made for a pretty good argument for the existence of punk rock. I live in hope, and will give the second record an airing soon.

You may have to check out his 2010 album he did with Leon Russell and produced by T-Bone Burnett.

Nothing earthshattering but a nice ditty to have.

All of his '70 - '75 catalog is worth owning. There's filler on almost all of those LPs, but you try and write nine albums in six years (including a double), with a soundtrack and live record thrown in for good measure, not to mention stand alone 45s, and see what you come up with.
