The Strawbs did a rather epic version of this when I saw them last year. Clearly one of Cousin's finest.

The ubiquitous and easily recognisable Rick Wakeman on piano

Delightful

True

Although woodburners have become quite popular

Yes. Mind you, even in '72 I don't think most people did - nostalgic even when written. We were fortunate enough to get central heating in '71, think we were the last of our circle of friends to do so.

It's a beautiful track.

the Starwbs did reworked version of the track in the early 2000s. Also other tracks too

Nice.

Very nice

Love Lambert - he's a great mood setter - but for really taking flight, I'm convinced Miller's playing here is bolder than any other that Cousins has ever had behind him.

Those piano runs just past the 5 minute mark are pretty great too.

Very true

Most fireplaces were ripped out in the early 70s to be replaced by central heating (if you were lucky) or 'flame effect' electric fires!

Settles down really nicely into that meditative part, too. Cohesive, but with lots of change of mood. One of his best 'epics' for sure.

Indeed. With a tip of the hat to his Cambridge buddy, Nick Drake.

Indubitably so.

Here he is again. Just a tad sharper in his rhythm work too.

Now comes the rocker. As hard as Cousins ever rocked? Love the vocals. Nothing even vaguely 'folkie' in how he sings "the actor lies down naked on his bed of glowing coooalls"

Glover's great on this too.

More soloing and 'forward' playing than you get with Strawbs - yet it's all very sensitive. It's not messy, they're listening to each other.

Love the tempo change where the wah pedal comes in. And that low, Lennonesque guitar underneath that I suspect is Lambert.

Self immolation? Cousin's singing about himself? He's rather found of slightly fey twirls of his right arm and hand...

It's lovely isn't it?

Glover drives the stuff along magnificently

Love the solos on this - first Miller then Rick.
