Communards
Today's thrift shop find is Communards' eponymous debut album, the original UK CD edition from 1986 on London Records. Mine is a wee bit scratched, but it's the first time I have seen it in thrift, and it plays fine, so... Communards were an offshoot of Bronski Beat - same producer, Mike Thorne, same lead singer, Jimmy Somerville, and music-wise, more of that angsty gay falsetto yearning, now with commie graphics. A well thought-out package that kicks off with the monster hit, "Don't Leave Me This Way", an inspired Hi-NRG cover of Thelma Houston's disco chestnut, which became the top UK single that year. The album itself is all very dancey, all very jazzy, all very hopeful, bright, and poppin'. The odd repose with a piano ballad here and there gives the whole thing an assured and balanced feel, and little Jimmy Somerville, that extraordinary soprano castrato, why he's got his nutsack squeezed by a tight grip, the pop gods are squeezing Jimmy's nuts to lift the whole thing to another level. Don't get the later remasters of this baby, they fuck around with the track list on those.

Never owned an album by them, but some cracking singles. "You are my world" featuring the insufferable Rev Richard Coles on excellent keyboards is my fave.
