Either Forever Changes, There's A Riot Goin' On or The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady - in 1987. I didn't actually have a CD player of my own 'til around 1990, and by then I had at least fifty CDs (I worked in record stores).
Possibly even before those I got a promo freebie of Helcio Milito's Kilombo. It was about a year before I got to listen to it - and when I did I was floored. A crucial early signpost on my Brazilian Music journey... and I've never met anyone else who knows the album.
What was the first CD you ever bought? And which year?

Re: What was the first CD you ever bought? And which year?
I didn't buy a player until I had about 40 CDs, because the whole idea of getting a player felt so "consumer"-like - "Well, now that I have this thing..." I'd dub them onto a cassette to hear them in the meantime. After a while, enough new stuff, archival stuff that had never come out before, and stuff that had been out of print for years (seeing Hatfield And The North back in print was an encouraging sign) started to make me see the light. But this is the one I saw in a store, a two-LP set with enough extra material to fill four discs, and right then I thought, "Okay, you got me!"
[EDIT: forgot to include the year - 1991, when it had just been released.]

1990 sounds about right. I didn't have a CD player yet but I couldn't resist a CD of "Lick My Decals off Baby" which I had to beg people to let me listen to. It's tricky listening to Beefheart with people who don't dig it but it CAN be done.

The main incentive for me was when I discovered that the best LP's were getting financially out of reach, but crucially, were now also appearing as Cd reissues. I was very much an oldies guy, so this was important to take into account.

When did you buy your first from a thrift store?
THAT is the question.
( when did cds first appear in charity shops; I’m guessing when the masses couldn’t stomach Dire Straits any longer...)

Thrift came very late, about 15 years ago. But 2nd hand CD shops from the git go.
BTW Dire Straits are no longer mainstays of thrift. The new King and Queen are Robbie Williams and Celine Dion, respectively.

Neil Young - This Note's For You, 1988 I think. I forget why that was the release which made me switch formats.

The Tracy Chapman debut, a very dodgy Joe Satriani ep, and something else I forget. Must’ve been about 1988. Maybe early 89.

I had a cd collection before I bought my first cd player, also around 1990.

These two, in early 1986, simply because they weren't released on vinyl - I didn't have a player until about a year later...

XTC-Nonsuch in 1992. I came pretty late to CDs. Still plays perfectly fine despite scaremongering about CD deterioration.

Re: What was the first CD you ever bought? And which year?
how do you folks remember this stuff?
about all I remember was I had a few cd's before I had a cd player. I know I did one of those 10 cd's for 1 cent deals but only remember two cd's
1. Wish You Were Here
2. The Cure - Disintegration
I know early on we also had
Sarah McLaughlin-Touch
Pixies -Doolittle
Peter Gabriel - Passion
