I don't know if this had anything to do with Hal Blaine's passing, but before I smacked the 'snooze' button on my clock radio this morning I heard the DJ refer to "a bunch of LA session musicians" as "The Wrecking Group".

The ASO is promoting two separate rental concert in the hall with one email. Subject line:
ADAM ANT & CELTIC WOMAN
It's like the worst mashup. Or the best?!
No, definitely the worst.

Re: Random Music stuff thread.
So my wife tells me she was listening to a Japanese radio show one morning and the announcer tells a story about this guy in a restaurant who sees Bono with another guy at a table there. The guy is a big Bono fan so when he sees Bono's companion get up and go to the toilet he stops him and asks if it would be okay if he came over to their table to get an autograph. He says, sure, that would be fine. So the guy goes over and says how much he loves his music and gets an autograph. Finally, when he is done eating he goes to the cashier and the cashier tells him there is no need to pay, that Mr. Springsteen already paid for his breakfast.
Question authority.

Re: Random Music stuff thread.
Note that the artist's name is mistakenly given as Randy Wood in the first paragraph. (Coincidentally or not, this was the name of both a former president of Dot Records and a former president of Vee-Jay Records.)
Somebody at cool78s.com says: "I do not know if there where any further releases in this series, but the tongue in check tone of the press release that accompanied it may indicate that it was a one off gimmick for this release. It does, however, sound as good as the press release would like you to believe!"
Meanwhile Jim Childs at quora.com posted this Billboard clip from the following November...
... which doesn't disprove the "one-off gimmick" theory. (If they were serious about the format, one assumes that they would have launched it with several records by popular artists, rather than with one record by an unknown performer with an "acquired taste" voice.)

Wow. I don’t remember that, never before heard of it and have never knowingly seen one the records in question. I’m not sure I would even believe it if you hadn’t posted this. “One-off gimmick” seems about right.

Re: Random Music stuff thread.
Two meal-time incidents of musical synchronicity today.
1) Lunch at Austin Grill: lotta '80s stuff playing on the restaurant's sound system. I was reading John Fogerty's book Fortunate Son (really good, btw), and he was talking about his songwriting process: "The real trick is knowing when you've got crap, because then you've got to start over. And if you do enough of that crap, at least with me, that's when I get to the good stuff. I can't skip the pages where the crap is. Every single time I start on a new song, it's always a bunch of pages of crap first, and then finally something good will happen. Out of nowhere, a phrase will go through my head, like 'train of fools,' and I'll start writing a song."
I thought, he coulda picked a better example. "Train of fools" is really just a variation on "ship of fools" which has been done to death; it also sounds like Aretha's "Chain Of Fools." (I don't know this Fogerty song, mind.)
No more than ten seconds after reading/thinking that, World Party's "Ship Of Fools" started playing over the speakers.
2) Supper with my dad at Bertucci's. Noisy crowd, and a multi-decade mix of music playing very quietly on their sound system - too quietly to really listen to. I was just sitting there eating and for some reason I started to think of "Cool Jerk" by The Capitols. About one minute later, my ears pricked up at a familiar-sounding snare/tambourine beat (I couldn't hear the bass/piano riff)... sure enough, "Cool Jerk".
oo-WEEEEE-ooo.

Re: Random Music stuff thread.
I saw Zorro Is Back at a kids' matinee when I was eleven years old, with my friend Chris. We loved it.
I haven't seen it since, but I've never forgotten the theme song. Over the years it would occasionally, without warning, come to mind...
... and I would wonder whether the opening lyrics really were -
- as I thought they were at the time. (Even at that age I didn't think it made sense, exactly.)
I just found the song on YouTube (performed by Oliver Onions! How did I not remember THAT name?), and it turns out the first line is really Here's to being free.

Re: Random Music stuff thread.
There's an "Oldies" radio station in DC that I used to listen to a lot back in the '80s and '90s. When they phased out the fifties songs and phased in more of the mid-to-late-seventies ones, I stopped listening. I didn't really begrudge them doing that (much) - I could see the logic behind it. But they just weren't playing enough of what I wanted to hear any more.
I was out in the car tonight and got bored with whatever discussion was on NPR, so I put on that oldies station for the first time in a LONG time.
They were playing "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz and my heart just sank.
But then I thought, fair enough - this song is older now than "Rock Around The Clock" was when I first heard it in '74...

Weirdly enough, both Scarface AND Willie D of the Geto Boys are running for seats on Houston's City Council. Neither, however, is running in my district.

I was listening to ‘High On A Rocky Ledge’ by Moondog the other day and I noticed it sounded quite a bit like the verse to ‘Son of my Father’
You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

My college radio station has asked me to send in a few sets and they're playing one tonight (Monday April 20) at 10 Eastern. I guess they're short staffed. It's just miserable me, so it is very low key compared to what Min and I do on Mixcloud, but if you're awake and think you might like what I play then tune in:
