Just dug out and played my old vinyl copy of this for the first time in about 20 years.
What a fabulous selection of songs and players, and what a fine run of albums he made before he started focusing on soundtracks to pay the bills for most of the 80s.
Saw the man and his band in London a few months back for the first time since the Borderline tour with John Hiatt in 79/80 and he's still got it in spades. As last year's Straight Street proves.
Given that the man is impeccable taste incarnate, I'm sure he must rate imposingly high in the BCB canon.
I mean, seriously, how can anyone who professes to love music not adore Mr C?

I'm not a huge fan although I couldn't exactly tell you why.
His musicianship is great, no question about that. It's probably the voice and the abundance of instrumentals that keeps me away.

I like some of this stuff. The Jelly Roll Morton adaptation Pearls/Tia Juana from Jazz is ace.

Cooder himself absolutely hates it. Regards it as extremely badly executed.

I like "Bop Til You Drop" a LOT.
keep in mind, I think his movie music is pretty ace, especially "Southern Comfort" & "Paris, Texas"
I like that Mavis Staples thing he produced a while back. Mavis didn't quite cut it but the band certainly did.

Not words I could ever see myself using.
As for Ry, he's a cranky old git, and sometimes it hurts the music. His last few had some very meh original songs. But the first 5 are pretty much perfect.
This one I'm hit and miss with. I think it's good, on balance, but a bit scattershot.
Better than the Queen album of the same name, though. Barely.

Me too.
The digital production got a lot of flak at the time, but I think it sounds terrific, especially the interplay between Cooder and Lindley.
This is killer:
Jazz, on the other hand, seems like an exercise in style and I've never really warmed to it. Should give it another try, though, it's been ages.

Ooh, my favorite track from BtyD ^
Yeah, the production's a bit clean for my tastes, but the guitar interplay is great.
Also (allegedly), they used a lot of cheap guitars on it, so maybe they thought that would give it more grit. On that track, at least, it does.

Jazz is one of my least favorites by Ry but I'm a big fan. Having said that, I still play it from time to time. I never dug deeper into the music that inspired it as it's not my thing. As someone said, lots of good musicians on it.

Re: Ry Cooder - Jazz
“Jazz” is the album that opened the door for me to all early, pre-WWII jazz. Jelly Roll Morton, etc. now some of my favorite music of all time. For that, I thank. It! Wonderful listening.
