What rot!

Bowie sped it up, added tunes, took it to the top ten.

The question isn't who made it popular, but who invented it. Bowie was a master thief. That's not a bad thing when it comes to pop music, by the way.

Supposedly the first one of these (unless you count Train Kept a Rollin', which was also Grady Martin, depending on who you believe)

In just about every case, there will be antecedents. And antecedents to antecedents. Going all the way back to when the caveman banged two rocks together.

Another calypso contender.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Young Marble Giant's Colossal Youth really set the template for lo-fi indie didn't it?

Didn't seem that way at the time. There was a lot of that kind of thing about on singles, which I was buying in industrial quantities at the time – I think the lo-fi sound was as much a function of the independent label scene itself, with bands going down the Desperate Bicycles shoestring route of recording and issuing material on their own imprints. While the Moxham brothers were deliberately minimalistic, they were basically adapting pre-existing pop forms to home-made synth , drum machine and bass backing to showcase Alison's voice and Stuart's songs, which to me, always had a delightful pop sensibility to them.

Is this the ‘Ur-moment’ for Goth? I know there’s precursors like ‘Some Velvet Morning’ or some acid folk thing but ‘80s Goth as the genre become defined.

It’s Bauhaus’s fault not the Birthday Party, right?

There were many proto disco songs Googa, it's impossible to say which was first, but it would certainly be earlier than 74.

Some of which were Philly soul dance numbers, anyway, it's often cited as the first (mainstream).

Levine's guitar sound invented goth (guitar sound wise) too.

And how the fuck is Rock Your Baby disco anyway?
This one's got the euro stomp beat although probably a bit too fast for the average northern soulster), space age sounds and silly words about dancing delivered in very high voices, and it's from 1963.

While this one invented Patti Smith

although every version on youtube sounds way too feeble compared with the dynamic range of a 7", even if it purports to be a recording of the single
