Shit or Hit: Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough

Postby fange » 05 Dec 2018, 00:16

Let's go back to the heady days of 1981, and one of the first singles by the boys from Basildon...

What did you think then, BCB? How about now?

It's closer to hit, but I prefer 'New Life' of their early ones.

I love it. You can sure tell the Vince Clark influence if you're a Yaz fan too.

They were great for three or four albums and have comeback a time or two on later ones.

'New Life' certainly isn't nearly as played as 'JCGE', is it. I hear the latter at least once a month somewhere, somehow.

It's ok. Their plinky pop period didn't last long and they started to smell really bad after a year or two - have you heard 'Master and Servant' lately? - but this is ok.

This indeed. Plus ' See You ' .

I love them in general. Music For The Masses is one of my favourite albums.

It was their first (or maybe second) single and was only a minor hit in the UK, this was their first major hit I think.

Edit: Actually 'Dreaming of You' was their first single.

Not my favorite song by them (nor my favorite period), but...yes- "shouldn't work but absolutely does". I voted hit.

Did not like them at the time, but at least since 1994, I liked that song, especially for the lines:

Just like a rainbow
You know you set me free

I just like how those words jump at you and take you to the refrain. "Just like a rainbow" in particular is very bouncey.

Depeche Mode are the great synth survivors and the most successful synth band to emerge in the UK in the 1980s. If I were to point at their best work, it would be "Construction Time Again", with the Arabian flavored "Everything Counts". That idea was a bit novel, and one I always liked.

It's a proper synth pop smash, and way better than New Life. My favourite by them is this thing, which isn't a pop smash or a stadium rock thing:
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I bought their first three singles on Mute (this was the third) and liked them a lot, but dropped them after Vince left - not as a matter of policy, it was just what happened. Never heard an album by them and never could take them seriously as a sleaze band. It always looked like a Basildon Young Conservatives Tarts and Vicars Party.
Dreaming of You was the one I enjoyed most, because it came first, but this one is a close second. Hit for me
