Don't know why they didn't do one disc of the alternate version and then one disc of outtake highlights. Isn't that what they did with the rest?

This suggestion makes so much sense that the only reason I can think of not to release a 2CD version is that it would cut into sales of the 6CD version, as very very few would want/need more than two discs worth

The Metallica ‘Justice...’ set, despite its faults, is a clear omission. But I wouldn’t expect anyone here, besides the book holes, to understand.
Heyyyy!

Juno Records has popped up a long list of favourite reissues, recommended for those who like diverse international sounds. Lots on there I still need to hear like JD Twitch’s anthology of German post-punk stuff.

The Norman Records 2018 archival list won’t be voted on till end of December but this is their long list of candidates (what an unusual concept, to actually wait for the year to finish before voting).

Nice to see the Shoes, This Kind of Punishment and Even As We Speak there, also nice to be reminded to track down that (hideously overpriced) vinyl reish of Bagpuss.

i want the bagpuss one, pricey though.

The Coltrane lost album is curious. Came out in June, i was searching it the other night and ready to get it, the 2cd version has already been reissued as part of another 3cd set. 1963 - New Directions

• The Lost Album / Both directions at once
• John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
• Selflessness
• Live At Birdland

Hey, that's me!
Thanks.

Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Ooh, I'll be adding that to my Christmas list. Dunno most of the names, but the presence of Malaria! and Mania D means it knows its stuff.

Some of Bureau B's trawls through the weird and wonderful world of Germantronic music are interesting too.

Got some catching up to do.

So you can’t just get the 2CD anymore? That’s weird and doesn’t make much sense, given it’s about to get another burst of PR from all the end-of-year Best of 2018 lists.

You can still get it but 2cd is £12.99 whereas all the tracks from the 2cds are included in the larger 3cd set for £20. Also, all but one of the original 2cd set fits on 1cd of the 3cd set. I guess pay your money and take you choice, i've gone for the 3cd. Mad marketing tho.

Why do people keep calling Coltrane's Both Directions At Once a reissue? It had never been heard before!! None of it!

Anyway it we're including "archival releases" that is one of the best of the year, as was the Miles Davis with Coltrane Live In Europe CD set.

I thought both Who vault releases this year - Live At The Fillmore East 1968 and Pete's Who Came First album - were first-rate. The former is the first release of a show that has often been bootlegged, but as a partial show and not in this quality. Just for the half hour improvisation that closes My Generation, it's pretty essential listening. And WCF is filled out with a second disc that puts almost all of his "private release" recordings dedicated to Meher Baba in one place, as well as a few contemporaneous ones I'd never heard before. And both in affordable 2-CD packages. I give them high marks.

Also loved Neil Young Tonight's The Night Live At The Roxy but again, not a reissue. A new live album. As is Songs For Judy, which will be out this month & probably also a great listen.

Of actual reissues of albums previously issued, I was quite taken by the Wire - Chairs Missing set which includes all the studio demos. This is one case where hearing the demos really informs the knowledge of the finished album. I'm anxious to get into 154 next - I know several of those songs started in radically different form than appeared on the LP.

You won't be disappointed. Both Directions is a really good Coltrane album, and Live At Birdland includes my favorite track by the Quartet ever, "Your Lady."

i was listening to Sean Rowley's BBC Kent radio show on iplayer, the show featured an autumnal playlist and he played Autumn Serenade by Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, which is on 1963: New Directions. Bloomin ace. Just waiting for it to (hopefully) arrive in my stocking on the 25th.

Oh yeah the Johnny Hartman album is excellent too! VERY deep ballads.

I need to reacquaint myself with "Selflessness", I have the Classic Quartet 8-disc box set so I sometimes lose sight of how the tracks were originally issued.

Yeah “archival” is probably a better name. That Prince album is also a new recording (albeit one bootlegged in the past).

Those Wire demos are great, not so much the Pink Flag extras as they’re not too different from the album versions, but it’s great to hear rougher 2nd and 3rd album material done in the style of Pink Flag.

Sorry, I’ve linked to it a bunch of times and figured if anyone cared they had already noticed!

Not me but I'm another who's curious and would like to hear it.

Okay so The Quietus has just published a list of Top 100 Reissues, Soundtracks, Compilations and Mixes. I'm going to paste the entire lot here because it's so much easier to read, as the webpages are so dominated by embedded bandcamp and youtube links that it's an arse to load (it kept crashing on my phone anyway). If your technology is better than mine you might prefer to read it here http://thequietus.com/articles/25761-re ... st-of-2018
