I have tried a couple of times, but it is very difficult. The opening song is impenetrable, and I kept thinking it would lighten up. but it just kept going. Full on. I will try disc two later on, but I cannot see it making any difference, even though I do find it interesting.

Disc two is a fair bit more accessible to my ears, so it may let you in just yet. :)

It is a bit more accessible and there are definite moments but it's hard going and I can't help but feel she's untethered herself from proper songs and floated into the shapeless ether sadly.

I have given it plenty of listens this week. It's not overwhelming me as previous albums.
I liked the way she opened though, noise as in a Swans-type of way, with the loose percussion and assorted strands of noise bouncing off each other- she had been listening to Anna Von Hausswolff there. Great stuff. But outside of a quirky, almost Japanese-like pop song there, I'm losing track of what I hear pretty quickly. The second album sort of gets mired in the same keyboardy midpaced balladry throughout and could do with something electrifying.
This is an album you need to dissect through the layers of mist thrown up by keyboards to check what is going on within the tracks and I am not sure if I have the patience to do that every time.
Not saying it is bad but Loud City Song was lots more diverse and showed that she was comfortable with anything from pop, torch song, modem jazz and alt.rock.

I was worried she'd never make an album I connected with as much as Ekstasis but this is the one. This is the album I needed right now.

So far this year I've enjoyed new releases by Gwenno, Chvurches, and The Damned, but still haven't heard many of the major 2018 releases. Usually around December I start reading "best of the year" lists and sample from them. One of the out-of-left-field albums I've enjoyed is 'Dungeness' by Trembling Bells which is pretty much completely retro in that it sounds like an amalgam of every popular sound of 1973, but so much of what I like these days (even among new musical acts) tends to be retro.

The previous one is much better IMO. Sometimes I struggle with the ‘deliberately slightly out of tue honest’ singing.

The only album this year that has really stuck with me is The Decemberists ‘I’ll Be Your Girl’. Glam Folk - what could go wrong?

Are you guys really claiming this isn't 'accessible'?

I can definitely recommend both the IDLES and Tropical Fuck Storm albums if you liked that, they're somewhat in the same vein.

With all due respect the Holter thing does not appeal to me.

(Wow, I kept it polite.)

I got as far as the execrable Everyday is an Emergency and gave up.

Anyone been listening to Amen Dunes' 2018 album Freedom? Apparently it came out in March but I've only just stumbled across it, having missed the superlative reviews for it on release e.g. "The fifth Amen Dunes album from Damon McMahon is his euphoric breakthrough, like a hallucination of the classic-rock songbook." (Pitchfork)

Apparently he's normally a bit of a weird folkie-experimentalist but on Freedom it's all enigmatic electronic pop. It's really growing on me.
