Back down to earth.....

I don't care much for A - terribly bland muzak. Nothing wrong with it but you could hear that in any shopping mall and never notice it.

I struggle with the vast majority of British folk (in fact, folk full stop if I'm being honest).... this doesn't really help.... I like Sandy's voice well enough but, my, it is so damn sensible and righteous isn't it (the song, not the vocal). ...

At a real push B but I don't like either that much.

Lucky A, pretty forgettable but harmless, wouldn't stand a chance in many other matches. But here it's in front of an extremely boring uberlong sleep-inducing tune. I like some Sandy Denny but when she's in this mood ... well I just can't stand it.

I love Sandy Denny's voice but that track isn't doing much for me on this breezy Wednesday morning.

A is sweet.

I like the Fotheringay album but Banks of the Nile goes on a bit too long without offering much other than a sustained, if rather plodding and downbeat mood and I'm always likely to nip off for a piss before it reaches the end. It's a song I want to like it more than I do.

I enjoyed A, breezy and easy on the ear in comparison.

The eponymous debut Fotheringay album is superb - a sheer delight and if you like this track and haven't bheard the album then please rectify that. A corker of an album with lead vocals shared with Sandy's husband Trevor Lucas.

Pagliaro was always on to a hiding to none with me up against the mighty Fotheringay.
That said the track was pleasant enough but lacked substance.

So an easy:

You know what? I enjoyed A - straightforward, tuneful, unchallenging.

Not too keen on either selection. I own a bit of Sandy Denny, but nearly always prefer American folk. The first one is on PYE; never heard of that guy, but it's very by-the-numbers. You can hum along to it, but no kicking heels together. B

I liked A a lot while listening to it and then completely forgot all about it as soon as it finished.
I really like that Fotheringay album but B is a poor choice: a bit of a tuneless dirge all told, albeit beautifully played and sung.

A was not the fat Italian opera singer I was expecting. I thought it had a sunny Beach Boys vibe brought into the power pop 70s. Actually it reminded me of Honeybus. This is the kind of thing I was hoping to hear more of. The Sandy Dennis track is lovely, with a chilly, autumnal, dark nights closing in feel - very appropriate for now!

Partly because I think it is much harder to pick something good like A, I'm going..
