Whew.

Having already stated how I feel about Slade, I'll say that the Kooper cut IS a bit of a mess, as Os said - I like parts of the kitchen-sink arrangement, but the out-of-tune vocals really let the whole thing down. Al got a bit carried away here I think. Still.....

I've voted Slade once. Never again. This is mawkish rubbish.

An unfamiliar Slade song, and it's apparent from the opening 10 seconds it's not a good 'un. Strange decision not to have Noddy singing the lead, which takes away the in yer face attitude and shiny hat, and without those vocals, you can't hide the Bay City Rollers blandness of this. The title and styling makes me wonder if they were thinking of calling it quits at this point. Feels like a saying goodbye, because we've run out of songs thing.

Not sure if Al Kooper is a new name to me, it doesn't sound particularly familiar. The bass is nice, and it's orchestrated and arranged to within an inch of its life. Woooah, hold the horses, there's a jazz freakout. All too brief, and really doesn't fit. Did someone break into the studio, was it a drive-by saxing? We may never know. It's a bit mental, isn't it? It's all over the shop, one of the worst saccharine choruses ever recorded, with a patchwork of different songs stitched onto it.

B for being a shocking hotch-potch of a track, and putting so much effort into doing it.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

More Slade! It’s Merry Xmas Everybody without the reindeers. No.

The Al Kooper is new to me and maybe I could warm to it. But anyway, on a first listen it’s good enough to win so

This was not my '70s, but i don't mind either of these so much. The poppy side of the Slade tune was quite nice, so i'm going with it.

I've never heard any Slade beyond the singles and this track was wasn't bad but strongly suggests they are probably short on any real hidden gems among the album cuts.

The Al Kooper track was better than I expected after reading comments. Not really my kind of thing but I admired its ambition.

I have very little to say about A, it's listenable but feels like a track that aims low and matches its aspirations. What Al Kooper seems to be going for kind of reminds me of Terry Callier's more soulful moments, who I know has been picked elsewhere in this round, but is so shambolic and janky in its playing and production that I can't help be distracted and fascinated by that side instead. But still, relative to A it seems to aim higher and reach nowhere near its aspirations but high enough in its own rickety way. B

A is nice, beatlesque fun, but a bit light-weight

A was always one of my favourite Slade tracks. One of many many gems that people who don’t know the albums will have missed out on. (“Miles Out To Sea” on the same album being another personal favourite.)

Doesn’t have the muscle of their more traditional output (in part due to Jim taking lead vocals) but it’s a cracking little tune.

A's a much better Slade track. A lot of fun.

B is competent enough, but like a lot of 70s soul, sounds like they got their blues at the Levis store. It could use a stronger singer, for one.

I mentioned Slade passing me by. In this tie it had Al Kooper sliding underneath them. Yikes.

a - I've normally got a lot of time for Slade, although that's based entirely on the singles. This is the sort of number that often turned up on the B-sides, although this has more of a vaguely disgusting taint of Merseybeat about it than usual, as others have noticed. Still, a jolly and brief solo from yobbo Dave, and it has a throwaway cheeriness about it. 5 / 10
b - surprised that some of the young shavers on here haven't heard much of Al Kooper, who I first became aware of as a former Royal Teen (Short Shorts may well be the greatest thing he was ever associated with, even if he did not play on it) and the organist on Like a Rolling Stone; as well as the latter, I bought the Super session album (largely because of loving Mike Bloomfield from his days with the Butterfield Band) and the first couple from Blood Sweat and Tears. After that, as far as I was concerned, he disappeared up his own arse, and I didn't miss him. Never heard anything from this album before. It obviously takes its stylistic cues from B S & T rather than his other previous, and as such really misses David Clayton Thomas. As others have noted, his (?) vocals are a bit weak, which means the stop-start arrangement, genre switches and random splashes of instrumental colour all detract from the song – if indeed there was one. Not really my thing then, and sadly not now, either. 4 / 10

A bolts it in, nothing especially special about it, just an enjoyable Slade song, and thats good enough considering B is shit.
