I don't need to play these two - they are both very familiar - in the case of Mott too familiar

For me it was the law of diminishing returns on subsequent Mott albums - the debut being robustly seminal and the second seminally robust. By the time of this track they had become too glam rock for me and a parody of themselves (for me, Bowie's influence was not a good one)

Magazine were a great band and this track is awesome - full of music

So despite me meeting and chatting to Ian Hunter in 1970 it's

Easiest tie of the round to call. Mott always were a bunch of journeymen who had the luck to be mentored by Bowie. But they weren't very good.

The Magazine track oozes sleazy passion and features brilliant playing.

B. It’s groovy fun.

Magazine sound a bit ‘prog with Johnny Rotten impersonator’ these days.

Easy A for me. Mott are one of those bands that I feel like I should 'get', but they kinda mostly pass me by.

Two of my very favourite tracks from the decade! and very different, too, which makes it more difficult to choose.

I'll come back later once the fuckwits have voted

This is what I was kinda expecting - early '70s against late '70s and trying to choose.

A is fine.

B is everything I absolutely fucking despise in one song. That's almost applaudable.

I haven't listened to Magazine in ages and this was never one of my favourite songs... but Mott always struck me as a bunch of dart players, barrow boys and roadies who struck it bloody lucky because Bowie wrote a song for them. This was, as with most of their stuff, generic knees-up pint-swilling toss.

Familiarity doesn't always breed contempt and I'm happy to bump into these two familiar old school friends.

I've always loved the sheer chutzpah of the Magazine track with its is widescreen production and Glam touches. The Mott track is rambling and amiable and, like the Magazine track, has an oddly triumphant core to it.

Hugely enjoyable tie but A is a bit closer to my heart.
