One of the weakest songs I've heard by Slade. Very disappointing.
Al Kooper's song was just soul by numbers, until the instrumental break which I liked a great deal.
So B then.

Again, these are knockout rounds. You gotta hit for the fences. If you want to go subtle, it's gotta be meaningful. Slade is largely love or hate for me, and this is hate. Americans never got to hear much Slade in the '70s and that was something I kept in mind choosing my songs for UK and European brethren. They might not have the same visceral response for Americans.

I was hoping A would be a Slade buried nugget, but it was a pretty forgettable song and sounded all too end of the pier for me.
B was almost too schmalzy even for my sweet tooth, but in the end I enjoyed it a lot. Great arrangement - I loved those muted trumpets. A very classy affair all round.

Slade again? Not necessarily a band who you expect to have deep cuts, but this was pretty enjoyable. I couldn't get on with B, which felt a little messy and not in a good way.

Al Kooper can fuck off. I'm still reeling from his obnoxious Monterey performance. A total fucking tool.
A - again - isn't prime Slade, but it wins here by a very large margin

i wasn't too wild about either one of these picks. maybe i need to eat lunch or start drinking or some damn thing.
i'll go with the slade track (even though i liked the last one much better). but both A and B have a kind of generic? feel to me here.

A weak Slade track to mu ears against the mighty Al.
Sadly not a great Kooper track although the second half is better than the first. Overall though too easy listening and MoR.
Two mediocre tracks deserves a mediocre response

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 11
A is a strange one. Not a Slade song I'm familiar with and there is a peculiar yearning, aching quality to it that is unlike what I usually expect. Unfortunately, I think that I might just be overreacting to a jaded performance, as the song keeps taking the easy, dull option when I expect a darker, sadder passage.
I'm unfamiliar with Al Kooper; this was smoother than what I'd expected - which was some kind of turgid piano blooze thing, probably - but ultimately the song itself was a bit lame. An odd selection.

Both enjoyable, but I'm going with boring, old, lowbrow Slade again.

Probably the weakest tie so far, or maybe the second weakest (match 2 was not my speed). Nothing really remarkable about these and while I’m glad we’re not getting wall to wall BCB consensus classics, I’m not really sure why these would get selected as knockout Cup participants. I’m not familiar with Al Kooper but Slade have a *lot* better. Still, they win here.

Re: 70s Cup Round 1 Match 11
A remarkably mundane Slade tune up against an Al Kooper track that sounds like it was made in the full heat of the summer of love (is it really a 70's tune?), and where someone dropped some speed into the engineers weed mix halfway through, and they ended up with the extremely bastard child of "MacArthurEloise Park" or suchlike. Fucking horrid song.
I really want to abstain for the first time ever. But A it is.

Normally I like Al Kooper songs, but this track is too messy for my taste. A is not really stellar but I don't feel anything wrong and definitely wins here.

Having dissed Slade in the previous round, I'm having to vote for a less obnoxious- if pedestrian- number by them now. Sorry, B; you're so far removed from what I like.
