Enduring love affairs

Postby GoogaMooga » 08 Oct 2018, 08:10

Time to list. In my studies and travels I have found that certain acts have a cult following almost exclusively in certain countries, to the point where they are even more popular there than in their own countries. Let's see how many of these enduring love affairs we can list. Okay, I'll start:

1. The Norwegians have an enduring love affair with Jim Reeves.
2. The Norwegians have an enduring love affair with Leonard Cohen.
3. The Danes have an enduring love affair with Smokie.
4. The Danes have an enduring love affair with Suede.
5. The Malaysians have an enduring love affair with MLTR (second rate Danish band).
6. The Japanese have an enduring love affair with The Ventures.
7. The Brits have an enduring love affair with Slim Whitman.
8. The Welsh have an enduring love affair with Paul Robeson.
9. The French have an enduring love affair with Sidney Bechet.
10. The Americans have an enduring love affair with Dave Clarke Five.

America barely remembered the Dave Clark 5 after the 1960s. I've never heard them on oldies radio. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who even recognizes one of their songs if they heard it. They're all but forgotten here.

Do the Brits still love Arthur Lee, or is that fading as the next generation comes of age?

7. The Brits have an enduring love affair with Slim Whitman.
8. The Welsh have an enduring love affair with Paul Robeson.

I represent both groups (to an extent) and I can't say I've noticed either being the case.

7. Ageing bus drivers have an enduring love affair with Slim Whitman.
8. Old communists have an enduring love affair with Paul Robeson.

Maybe :?

The vast majority of any generation of Brits wouldn't know Arthur Lee from Adam.
He will be held in high regard by a certain (well represented on BCB) type of music fan in every generation though - as a demographic, vanishingly small.

I was going to dispute GM’s assertion but then saw that you already did. But you are being a bit generous, as well. The DC5 went from hugely successful to almost completely irrelevant in the span of time from early 1964 to mid 1967. But then, so did Herman’s Hermits.

There's a lot of connections between Robeson and South Wales.

Sure (hence my comment about old commies - he was a campaigner bless him), but I wouldn't say it was still a big thing in Wales... Or even a thing.

"Enduring love affair" should be taken with a grain of salt - I wrote it because it sounds good. But yes, in their heyday the DC5 were more successful than even the Beatles Stateside, however brief a moment it was. Dave Clarke owned the catalog, and did not exploit it very well after the break-up. And he totally missed the boat in the age of CD.

And Slim Whitman was more popular in the UK than in his own country. Just one of those things. Years of poring over liner notes, and you get an inspired thread like this. ;)
