"Jackie"

What an album opener -- just the most thrilling thing:

It is. Smokes the original, too, for my money.

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

And don't forget the great Marc Almond

Cracking tune, in either Brel or Walker's clothes. I'd say that Walker's is slightly more mannered and slightly arch, whereas Brel is perhaps throwing more of himself into the mix.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I love Marc Almond but his take sounds limp and impotent next to Scott's huge primal roar of a version.

:( Surely unfair Count! What I love about some of Scott Walker’s Brel versions are how close they come to the brilliance of the original. Mathilde is another one.

The good old days, when Scott did what he did best .....sing great songs, before he became a "serious artist".

Was he any less "serious" then, however? 30 Century Man has plenty of insight into the kind of guy he was even as far back as the Walker Brothers - just have a look at the references he was using for much of the orchestral arrangements on his albums for one. :)

That's a really good doco too, by the way. And, regarding the topic at hand, it's indeed a great song and interpretation.

My general distaste for Brel notwithstanding, this is indeed pretty terrific.

Mine's "It's Raining Today"... even if it does feel more like a side-closer than a side-opener. (I just realized that I probably feel that way because I first heard it that way... closing Side 1 of Fire Escape In The Sky.)

Perhaps I should have said more accessible rather than "up his own arse"

What is it you don't like about Brel?

I was afraid somebody was going to ask that.

I've been through it on here before. It never goes well.

Brilliant cover. I prefer Scott’s delivery, but Brel’s is also quite excellent. Scott Walker’s first four albums, especially Scott 4, contain some of my favorite pop songs from the 1960s.

The orchestra is a little on the jaunty side in Brel's version, and while you could mistake that glottal thing in his delivery for passion to me it just sounds, yeah, phglemmy.
Then, I have NO French so what do I know?

Maybe I'll search for it! I assume it's his voice/delivery, rather than his songs?

No, it's the songs. I only really know them in the English translations. I doubt that that's the problem, though.

Scott's own songs are almost always better than any of the covers, although I may make an exception for "My Death".

Scott Walker’s covers of Brel are the best. They’re better than Bowie’s of course. But they don’t quite reach the fantasticosity of the originals. It’s to do with the translation of the lyrics, and how the translation inevitably sanitizes the original. For instance Brel’s Mathilde is “a dog who’s followed us back from town”, which is missing from the Scott version.
