I couldn't get with A I'm afraid. It's just not my music in any way, shape or form.
World of Twist take Roxy and Neu and give it a Britpop twist (see what I did there). In many ways they seem an earlier version of what Super Furry Animals were going for, but WoT have an immediacy about them that I really liked.

I just recently digitised my CD copy of that Ulver album and gave it a listen after. Gregorian chanting over black metal riffs is just one notch below Spinal Tap levels of earnest silliness but it's still more tolerable than that baggy-lite shite of the second song.

Haven't heard much Ulver, aside from that album of 60's garage/psych covers. This is not bad, although I'm not sure black metal should be so melodic.

World of Twist surprised me. A fun track, one I would enjoy dancing to if I went to dance clubs, and if I danced.

Ulver are one of those bands that seem to be jack of all trades, master of none. Their Shadows of the Sun is one of the worst albums I've ever bought, Fennesz fuzzing up behind some of the worst lyrics/vocals ever recorded. Anyway, this is in their more familiar black metal/shoegaze stylings, lending itself an obvious negative comparison point in Alcest's Souvenirs d'un autre monde. I know this was first, but it really isn't in the same league, and it somehow manages to be tame and silly at the same time. Still, there's a touch of bravery in choosing metal in the cup on this board.

B is another wtf moment, I've seen lettuce that's been run over that has more body than this. I thought it was a parody opening, but this is the actual track. All the way. This is seriously it? Might be the worst track in the entire cup, including Molly Hatchet.

The Ulver is pretty decent, much to my surprise considering I usually find this whole genre trite as fuck (maybe there's a tad of that here too, but not enough to spoil the track), so A it is for actually subverting my usual opinion of the genre and so on.

A for me. I like black/folk metal stuff from Ulver. I don’t care much for the rest, though.

a - missed out on black metal in the early rounds, glad some has turned up. Don't know Ulver, but am passing fond of the Alceste DF mentioned (I entered a track from that in a prog cup, and won the tie, IIRC). This was all rather splendid, I thought, although I don't get the mentions of Gregorian chant, speaking as someone who actually owns whole albums of that sort of thing. 6.5 / 10
b - this also unfamiliar to me, and it's all right; I get what G means, but driftin's description also rings true. 5.5 / 10

A is "not for me" but I rather enjoyed it. It's lighter on its feet and more tuneful than much of its ilk, with an odd wistfulness to it, even if I remain not entirely convinced I could put up with much more of that kind of thing.
As for B... sorry G but in the year 2018 it sounds horribly naff and cheap. Roxy and Neu!, the holiday camp years.

Lol at the block voting for A. This Cup is a farce with some of the worst opinions in any of these I can recall. Entertaining for sure but so bloody wrong.

Block voting? WTF are you on about, B was literally the worst track in the cup so far. I don't think I've even seen anyone write anything complimentary about Ulver, but you're just giving B a pass because it isn't a metal track.

Oh I wasn’t being serious about block voting - I was half asleep when i posted. However, this Cup has highlighted theres a new BCB take on what’s good which is not in line with my tastes which is implicit but not obvious on YY - ie the old NME/classic rock flavoured consensus isn’t there - it’s prog, jazz & experimental stuff that pushes people’s buttons increasingly. Not for me at all but didn’t mean to come across quite as grumpy as I did. Even though I finished bottom of my group.

I voted against A both because I didn’t like it but mainly as I love B - one of the best picks in this whole thing.

I'd say there's a handful of voices in the wilderness who shy away from the old classic rock and soul consensus. Look at Yakety Yak, you can't get traction on a thread if it mentions anything later than 1985. Unless it's about Paul McCartney after 1985. The proggers have been here longer than I have, too.

And you make it sound like a bad thing, too. It just becomes a bit of an echo chamber, if everyone has the same taste. I just find it weird that the lines of you and G see it as having worse taste, whereas it just seems that there's a smidgen more variety.
