I do think that was utterly ridiculous but anything that pisses off Mourinho, especially connected to medical matters after his slanderous and totally false comments about Reading’s care and attention following Petr Cech’s injury at the Madejski Stadium, is good by me.

Reckon we'll get Argentina, Iceland and Australia in the draw.

FIFA leaked the ”dress rehearsal” already have they?

I’m going France, Egypt, Korea.

Ideal scenario is Poland, Tunisia, Panama. Worst case is Brazil, Sweden, Nigeria.

Poland. We always draw Poland - it would be a good draw for us if we did this time.

Let's hope Wilshere can stay fit and get himself selected - his pass for Sanchez's second last night was fabulous, and I don;t think we have anyone else capable of that kind of decisive through ball.

Indeed.

Imagine Kane with that kind of service.

In other internationals I see Ryan Giggs has been appointed Wales manager.

Presumably they are still looking for somone to manage them in friendlies.

Indeed Rayge, Toby and Rother would have had Solanke and Abrahams in the current team.
They must have been flavour of the week when they were posting.

From Sept 5th:
Diamond Dog wrote:One thing I did think about yesterday is how young the side is, with up to half of them in their very early to mid 20's (Rashford being even younger). Maybe I should cut them a bit of slack because, in many ways, Southgate is doing what I've been proposing for a number of years - forget about the next tournament (we aren't winning the World Cup) and concentrate on keeping the young nucleus together through the tournament, gain that experience, and then kick on for the Euros with a squad that's played together for three years or so... hopefully see an improvement, gradually replace the older heads that are left and then gear up for Qatar in 2022... where, if all is well, we should have an established youngish team, who understand what the manager wants and work well together.

Are we in England prepared to give Southgate that six years? Probably not.

And Nov 11th :
Diamond Dog wrote:I thought we actually played very well, all in all. At least there looked to be a joined up approach to the selection. I'm certain we're better with three centre backs - it allows our wing backs to bomb on and they're much better at that than defending. Loftus-Cheek looked very assured and showed real calm in his selection of passing, running, holding the space. He's just booked his World Cup ticket, for certain. Dyer looked good. I'm still totally bamboozled by what Livermore gives us besides an inferior version of what Dyer gives us but... if it gives us the base to allow the wing backs to get forward, I guess it's a necessary evil.

I remember the light going on with me as regards Southgate in that game in early September - it was like "The guy is at least trying something new and giving youth a chance". The rest of that paragraph is now obviously terribly pessimistic, but the idea was there....

And then we played the three centre backs in November - that was the moment for me where I thought...yes, this is showing real promise.

Of course I didn't see us getting this far though.... what Southgate has achieved is tuly remarkable when you look back and see the kicking we were all giving him back in early September last year. Ten months on and we're two games away... jeez. Amazing....

I see Sterling has withdrawn from the two friendlies with a back injury.

Odds he'll be fit for the first Man City after the two friendlies?

Has Lord Rother accepted Wilshere isn't that good yet?

We will have learnt alot last night - playing Spain and losing but certainly more than holding our parts of the game. Shocking decision to disallow Wellbeck's late equaliser, which would have been deserved, I think - though Spain were clearly the better side for long periods.

Hope Luke Shaw is recovering from that terrible head injury too. He is one unlucky bugger, to put it mildly.

Midfield was crying out for some creativity again last night. Not sure who could fill that role...

Dele Ali was, again, abject. Hugely over-rated.

Kane was, again, ineffective, ponderous and largely anonymous. Worst ever Golden Boot Winner. Over-rated. I’ve heard loads of talk over the last year of him being potentially the most valuable striker in the world. Absolute tosh.

We have a major problem with midfield creativity - that's a given. Our first recourse though should be to get Henderson out of there, not Alli.

You simply can't score the goals Kane has and not be very good. Sorry, but you're looking at the wrong answers to the right questions.

3-0 up away at Spain and Sterling scores twice.

What is Pickford playing at? Good game though. Could be more twists.

I would say that that was a remarkable game, but I didn't even remember to check the score until they were about 40 minutes in, and only saw the second half.

Still, maybe this Nations League business is to be taken seriously? Spain certainly looked like they cared a lot, although the English celebrations at the end were rather muted. In any case, it seals second spot (thus no relegation and no adverse effect on the world ranking) for England, barring a catastrophic loss to or total thrashing of Croatia.

The lower groups are maybe more fun as they give the smaller teams something to genuinely compete for... although in San Marino's case they seem set for the wooden spoon as usual!

Setting up the first goal with the best pass of the game to Kane, maybe?
