The Beach Boys - Carl was the best singer, Brian did great harmonies and falsetto, The Wanker had a decent rock & roll whine. Tie
Clash - Joe
Pink Floyd - Mr Barrett
Sonic Youth - Kim
The Band - dunno - not sure who sings what. Not Robbie, though
The Monkees - purely as a vocalist, Micky
Pixies - Kim. Can't stand Fathead
Simon and Garfunkel - Paul
The Temptations - Whoever did the lead on My Girl, It's Growing and Since I Lost My Baby
Black Flag - no idea
The Move - Roy
Buffalo Springfield - difficult, but, again purely as vocalist, probably Richie
Fleetwood Mac - Christine by a distance
King Crimson - none. Vile band
Bananarama - Can''t tell them apart
Jefferson Airplane - Marty

If anything, I'd say he exceeds the criteria for "bluesman."

The Beach Boys - Carl
The Clash - Mick
Pink Floyd - Rick and Dave
The Band - Levon and Rick - don't like Richard
The Monkees - Micky
Pixies - Frank
Simon and Garfunkel - Paul
Faces - I love Ronnie L, but it is Rod.
The Temptations - David Ruffin is the greatest male soul singer of them all. But Dennis Edwards is fucking aces as well.
The Move - Carl has the better voice
Buffalo Springfield - Stills
Fleetwood Mac - I like the late 70s trio harmonising best.
King Crimson - Greg Lake is the only singer they ever had that I like.
Bananarama -
Jefferson Airplane - Grace is unlovely but effective.

The Beach Boys - Ultimately, Brian. He's expressive as hell even when he's craggy. And Carl has given some truly amazing performances, but we forget that he had some very weak ones too - particularly early. I think Dennis might actually be second.
The Clash - The combo. Both are far less interesting on their own.
Pink Floyd - Syd, of course.
Sonic Youth - No opinion.
The Band - Probably Danko, but Manuel had the best individual performances.
The Monkees - Same as my favorite songwriter, musician, and personality - Nez in every case.
Simon and Garfunkel - I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Artie. Without him Paul would have stayed in England and would still be a folkie.
Faces - Ronnie Lane all day every day.
The Temptations - Gotta be Mr. Ruffin.
Black Flag - I'm afraid I find myself saying Rollins. However he may irk in any other context, that was the perfect gig for him.
The Move - Wood.
Buffalo Springfield - Gosh, Stills was a hell of a talent then. Neil was great, but more as a diversion, and Furay had the purest voice. But it's Stills I prefer to listen to, honestly.
Fleetwood Mac - Can't choose. Though I've come to appreciate Kirwan a lot more lately. And I find Stevie underrated - she's given some truly great vocal performances.
King Crimson - Greg Lake by miles. He even made ELP tolerable at times.
Bananarama - No idea.
Jefferson Airplane - Grace, but most of the truly great vocals were Grace and Marty together. I love that they were never lovers, but there's so much intensity in the combination. Maybe that's why.

Fleetwood Mac - I dunno. It's a toss-up between Christine and Stevie
King Crimson - Greg, followed closely by Jon A.
Bananarama - Mike
Jefferson Airplane - Grace and Marty

I think Rollins was probably a better frontman/spokesman for Black Flag, but Keith Morris is a better singer.

I gather there's no footage of him fronting the band, though.

Well yeah, you'd think so, but some people are going for Waters or Gilmour. :?

God, i enjoy Ronnie Lane's music and singing as much as just about anybody whose name isn't Dave, but i find it a bit mystifying how many people are saying they prefer his singing to Rod's.

The Beach Boys - Carl
The Clash - Joe
Pink Floyd - I tend to see them as two different bands, Syd's and Syd-less. I prefer the first and never cared who sang in the second.
Sonic Youth - Kim
The Band - Definitely Rick Danko, love his singing
The Monkees - Micky
Pixies - Kim, but I like a lot when she and the fat guy sing together
Simon and Garfunkel - Undecided, Art's voice is better and his range is broader, but I love Paul singing too
Faces - Rod by some miles and more (and I love Ronnie's songs)
The Temptations - Not sure who sings what
Buffalo Springfield - Stills
Fleetwood Mac - Christine
King Crimson - Lake
Jefferson Airplane - Grace
Nobody's ferpect.

It is not mystifying at all.
This is BCB.

Some of these idiots think Syd is a better singer than Dave, too.

Oh John don't be such a classic rock bore. Of course he's better. Syd's vocals are distinctive and suit his songs wonderfully, Gilmour is perfectly capable but his vocals have no character at all.

Paul Simon

You have your blinkers on, you silly billy
It's pretty much exactly the other way around. Syd's vocals are weak, adenoidal and very often sound like Ray Davies, as I remarked to myself just yesterday while listening to the Early Years set. Rick Wright is by far the best singer on the first album. Syd's better than Waters but that's the best you can say for him.
I agree wholly that his voice suits his songs well, because he rarely - at this point at any rate - wrote stuff that didn't sit comfortably within his range. And he was very sensible to give Matilda Mother to Rick to sing as he'd never have managed it and we'd have ended up with something like If It's In You.
I like Syd, but he's the third best singer in the band. ~
The fact that people can't tell his voice from from Nick fucking Mason's (cf Scream Thy Last Scream, which often gets credited to Syd) says all you need to know.

Not, of course that any of this negates anyone's preference of him being their *favourite* singer.
He's just not objectively the *best*
