Wrong one dude!

But it does mean that, like the Beatles, they're half-dead, so they have that in common

So....

if you're going for a band who made music ROUGHLY within the same pop/rock genre as the Beatles, then your choice is indefensible

is that fair?

Day doesn't make a difference to me, I'm stoned all the time, but I genuinely don't know what you are asking me.
My choice isn't indefensible, I just defended it. And where did I suggest that YLT were in roughly the same pop/rock genre as the Beatles, and any of the other bands I mentioned weren't. And aren't all bands we discuss here in that genre? What sort of stick would I have got if I went for Artie Shaw or Spike Jones and his City Slickers?
Actually, just popped into my head, by far my favourite band, as opposed to group, duo, soloist, etc., The Wrecking Crew.

oh, and 'Raymond' - naughty boy, don't do that

I wasn't really asking you, it was a general point.

in fact it's not really applicable in your case

Yes - nice one.

I didn't realise how many of them played on Axelrod's Song Of Innocence (bought recently, read the liner notes). Of course it makes perfect sense when you listen to it.

My answer for the past 20 years has been Gong (really Gong family). Not so much because they are my favorite band but that they had such a large population of musicians coming and going which led to drastic changes in genre. Add in the related bands and its a nice mix.

The Beatles are my second or third.

If you actually saw them, then maybe you should have stuck around to see they are far more than their supposed (and overstated) debt to influences like VU...

It was, at best, a cute show. I imagine their friends all enjoyed it.

George P. Smackers wrote:I guess I think that the idea of "favorite band" is a bit more personal than the answer "The Beatles" could express. They're too "great" to be that, it's like saying the Mona Lisa or Starry Night is your favorite painting.

I don't know that I agree with this. I think what is special about them is that everybody really did have what felt like a deeply personal relationship with them. Maybe it's because music is inherently a more personal and accessible medium than painting? If I spend a half an hour on FB, I'm bound to come across a discussion where somebody is proclaiming exactly what one of the Beatles meant or felt about a certain thing, as if they know them personally almost. People continue identify with them intensely.

Maybe this is changing, maybe it's a generational thing. Maybe people coming to them now are getting the greatness but not the connection. I'm not sure.

It's one of the only things that has remained consistent about me since the 70s. There's been times I wasn't interested in what they were currently doing, and times when I was way more interested in some new thing I was just finding out about. Today, if they announced they were playing live, I would probably try to go but not fuss too much if it was too expensive or too much trouble to get in. But in terms of having a "favorite band", they've been it since I was 11.

To the word.

XTC

unlike the Beatles I was around as their albums were released so could go out and buy them as and when they came out which was hugely exciting for me in the 80s as nearly all other bands I liked had their back catalogues already fully formed. It was a novelty to experience the anticipation of an upcoming release and hearing the lead off single for the first time.

Maybe so, but I'm pretty old. So you can have a sense of their monumentality without much personal connection at any age. All it takes is their songs coming on the radio all the time without feeling much for them except a kind of distant "O here they are again."
