Earlier..... Jade Warrior - Way of The Sun

Didn’t get them at all when I first played them a few years ago, but they have been a real grower. As opposed to the African and Far Eastern influences on earlier albums this one is more Latin American. Largely instrumental and although they do rock out a bit more on this album it’s still pretty chilled.

And NP

The rather splendid Anneke Van Giersbergen joined her first (?) band The Gathering in the mid 90s. This is the 2nd album with her up front and (without being anything new for the genre) pretty decent prog metal it is; nice melodies, superbly sung and thankfully none of the chugging metal riffs that make me reach for the off button pretty damn quick.

I love Way Of The Sun, probably the best of the 4 they recorded for Island.

Fresh Italian prog. (Why do all Italian prog singers sound the same?)

Produced by the mighty Fabio Zuffanti but it still doesn’t do anything for me.

Following on from last night's listen. More rock than prog, it is a blast so far.

C gave this his (kind of) recommendation a week or 2 back highlighting that it was a modern band doing a bit of Gentle Giant. (There’s quite a few of them about as it happens).

Played it for the 2nd time today and it sounded much better than last week when I dipped my toe. Not bad at all.

Dutch band’s 2nd album, released in 2017. Melodic symphonic prog of a high order. Everything is in place, great songs, dramatic keys, ok vocals, decent guitar solos. I do like the Netherlands scene.

Played it just this afternoon whilst sitting in the garden. Perfect on a sunny day.

Crystal Palace - Scattered Shards.

German band’s new album. One of the decent few hundred prog bands that I alone appreciate on here for some odd reason. Not sure it’s quite as good as the previous 3 but still beats the crap out of a couple of other new releases I’ve played this week.

I’m playing the Steven Wilson remix of Tales From Topographic Oceans. I’ve owned the original since it came out and thought I knew every note. But Steven has revealed a lot of extra notes! It’s wonderful.
