Mitch Mitchell v. Ginger Baker
Better drummer, based on
skills
importance to their band
ability to play sense-numbing solos

Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Re: Mitch Mitchell v. Ginger Baker
MM on every level.
GB is probably a better jazz drummer, but DAMN he could be plodding for a drummer so obsessed with swing.
I can't think of a single Mitchell drum solo. Are there any? I'll bet they're no more than a minute long, unlike...

I never got the Ginger Baker thing. He must be much better than he sounds.
Mitch Mitchell was a force of nature. A perfect foil for the Hendrix Plan.

Re: Mitch Mitchell v. Ginger Baker
I don't want to choose, because I think they were each perfect for the band they were in. I don't think of Ginger as "plodding" in the slightest (examples?), and Phenomenal Cat's antipathy towards him in particular has always puzzled me.
Ginger was also delightful in Masters Of Reality and the Ginger Baker Trio (with Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell), so maybe that pushes him over the line. On the other hand, I've never heard him do a good solo (true of a lot of otherwise great musicians), yet he insisted on doing loads of long ones anyway, so maybe that pulls him back again.

I was joking about that last part, obviously, but I did see a video on Facebook today of Mitchell playing a solo on stage with Hendrix.

Mitch all day every day.
No knock on Ginger (his drumming on That's the Way God Planned It is quite powerful and stirring).

I've only really heard Cream, and The Experience just makes them sound flat and out-of-date. I do enjoy not liking Ginger. He really is full of himself. He should join The Verve.

Even ifMM were not so good, it would be a pleasure to vote against GB just for his mood spoiling and absolutely not serving the song performance on Can't Find My Way Home.

One example of how I find him plodding.
Ditto "Toad," which is frikkin' endless and ham-fisted in pretty much every live performance I've ever heard.
For the most part, he's rock solid on the studio stuff, but he never quite lifts things the same way MM does.
Add to that him criticizing other drummers (starting with Bonham, who had nowhere near the chops but a dozen times the feel) and it gives me pleasure to vote against him.
Like P-Cat says, his opinion of himself is of a higher level than the evidence shows.

Mitch all the way. One of my favorite rock drummers.
I’ve never understood the appeal or hype about Ginger Baker. His reputation feels like some kind of con. Plus he’s a massive tool.

Fair enough. I find the whole Blind Faith album plodding, though I think there's plenty of blame to go around there.

Leaving Baker out of this completely, there is a level of "liftoff" with Mitchell that you don't get with many drummers (something like "Manic Depression" really does seem to "fly" for lack of a better word).
Anyone know the actual story on Redding? It seems like there was something about him (be it personal or musical) that Mitch and Jimi founddifficult to bear.

Baker had the fucking audacity - the sheer bare faced fucking cheek- to say that John Bonham "couldn't swing for shit".
What a cunt.
Mitchell all day and six ways from Sunday.

Have we all seen the Ginger Baker documentary then?

The originator of the drum solo? Has anyone told Gene Krupa?

Like ‘em both but I’ll go Baker as he’s getting trounced. Fine in Cream, with Fela and Airforce.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Ginger, for sure.
Mitchell's good, but he always struck me as too much Keith Moon Jr.
