NME Top Singles of 1987

Postby Darkness_Fish » 06 Jul 2018, 14:15

Now we're talking, after a pretty bad couple of years there's plenty to approve of here. Eric B, Rakim, and Chuck D take hip-hop to a higher plane, M/A/R/R/S release one of the greatest dance singles ever recorded, and New Order wring out their last drips of quality with "True Faith", whose b-side, "1963", was also bloody lovely. Never heard of Cookie Crew before but even hearing that James Brown wooh-yay sample once again didn't dampen it's liveliness. Only the NME-core dullness of That Petrol Emotion really soils that top 10, I can even find a bit of room in my heart for The Fall.

1. Prince - Sign O' the Times

2. Eric B and Rakim - Paid in Full

3. That Petrol Emotion - Big Decision

4. Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause

5. M/A/R/R/S - Pump up the Volume

6. Eric B and Rakim - I Know You Got Soul

7. The Fall - Hit the North

8. The Sugarcubes - Birthday

9. New Order - True Faith

10. Cookie Crew - Females
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Ah! That Petrol Emotion's moment in the sun! Great single that, still have the 7".

Everything else is at least good apart from the dreadful New Ordure - as usual featuring the worst vocal this side of David 'Dave' Gilmour, and that jerky gimmicky Prince bollocks.

'Hit The North' is only second-tier Fall even tho' I suppose it's one of their most well-known efforts. The B-side 'Australians in Europe' is an absolute peach, however. Wild, funny, fabulous tune.

the two Eric Bs and the Prince

the long list looks rough...who knew Barry White was still having hits in 1987?!
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

PE and the 2nd EB&R way over and above the rest.

Prince's irrepressible groove is enough to overcome the sophomoric, preachy lyrics and TPE's moment in the sun (it helps that the "rap" part is pretty embarrassing).

Pogues and 'Mats from the long list, but you knew I'd say that...

I was 17 at the time, so I’m pre-conditioned to like a lot of this stuff but that’s a pretty bloody terrific 10, all 8/10 or higher. The rest of the list is stuffed with aceness too. I’m thinking of this as a playlist for the car right now.

Anyway - M/A/R/R/S, Public Enemy and Paid in Full today. Big Decision and True Faith just behind.

Much better than the 86 list, music was getting exciting again.

I went for Sign, I Know You Got Soul and Pump Up The Volume.
