Oh, Wire. So predictably obtuse.

Where are the handclaps? The modulation?

1, 2, 3 red light don't stop me
Baby you ain't right to stop me

The Incel Anthem. A clear winner.

So many of those Kasenetz/Katz bubblegum hits were downright creepy - even without taking into account the tender age of their target audience. I still like a bunch of 'em. But not this one.

I'm not a big Wire fan at the best of times, but this is hardly the best of times and this song is sounding alright right now, so I'll go with that.

It's funny, because I'd always just heard generic 'I love you/you love me' sentiments, but tonight just as I was playing it I realised how creepy the lyric was. You're right.

But still, I love it to bits - it's up there with almost anything from that period for me. The backing vocals, the wheezy keyboard, the handclaps, the 'gear change' towards the end - such joys! And it's a great tune.

Both tracks unfamiliar to me (I know)
The Wire track's riff seemed to me to be recycled from Nutbush City Limits. Not necessarily a bad thing, although I found the latter song intruded on occasions.
Neither set my world alight, but the edginess that crept into the Wire track later on tipped it to the Gummies

"1, 2, 3 Red Light" was new to me, and it has a certain proto-Bay City Rollers charm, edging towards glam but being so chintzy as to be almost unlistenable. The glam-motown stomp of the drums has my vague approval.

"A Question of Degree" isn't a stand-out Wire track, but the post-punk bounce of the bass and the spiky wobble of guitar make up for the weedy melody lines.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

That's oe of the Wire songs I always forward past. I think I'll vote with 1-2-3 Red Light and give it the benefit of the doubt that it's simply pro-lovemaking and not wanting to rape or mind-control anybody.

Has anybody read this book? Bubblegum, Glam, Pop - it is fascinating stuff. No offense to Gotobed and Robotface, but I find Chinn & Chapman far more interesting.

Great book, as is pretty much/all Reynolds's work. A labour of love that also doesn't leave our Gary Glitter's contributions to pop-culture, 'love the music, maaan'
'I'm off to The Bootleg Beatles as the bootleg Mark Chapman'
