Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino

Postby naughty boy » 12 May 2018, 19:27

Fans are down on it, some reviews praise its ambition but bemoan its lack of hummable melodies - is this the end of Arctic Monkeys? do you care?

Oh - this one's maybe the best:

Alex Turner's highly mannered (fake) vocal style has always been an obstacle for me. Maybe he's toned it down a little here? The song has nothing that grabs me, but it's OK. Not quite four stars out of five...

The album is .......quite dreadful. One paced, no melodies, and so many lyrics, they make Father John Misty sound tongue tied. If you expect guitars, forget it. If you like a man plonking on a keyboard with a drum machine for company, then you still won't like it. Shame, because I thought their last album, A.M., to be a stunner

It's one of those tremendously pretentious album titles that tells you all you need to know about the music within without even having to listen to it.

It didn't get better unfortunately.

Oh dear. I’ve not heard it yet but I also thought that A.M. was, by some distance, their best effort since the debut and possibly better. They’ve released some incredibly unfocused, tuneless and downright poor records as well as reaching a kind of apotheosis on that last record, exactly what they should be doing. I’m significantly underwhelmed by the Last Shadow Puppets as well, so it’s sounding like they may well have unfortunately reverted to type, with A.M. being some kind of high water anomaly. Still, it’s been downloaded now, so I’ll give it a listen this week.

I enjoyed this live performance (same song as the OP - sorry):

and there are maybe two others on the album that are potential growers. But it's quite obviously not very good overall. It's sort of suffocated - maybe they worked on it for too long.

I'll probably regret asking this, but - are there any UK rock bands doing good stuff right now?

I'll continue to stand up for Martha, from Durham area (village of Pity Me, to be exact).

I saw them at the Paradise in Boston a couple of weeks ago. Loved them.

From Courting Strong (2014):

From Blisters in the Pit of My Heart (2016):

Good tunes, good, unpretentious writing: "Subtlety's a word I cannot spell / But it's probably just as well." New record out soon, at least so they said at the Boston show.

Listening right now and, er, I don't hate it. I don't love it, either, but I'm half way through and not itching to change it, so it may not be a complete strike out (for me, at least). To be continued...

I liked Four out of Five. Its sort of Pulp circa the end. Maybe this is Arctic Monkeys' "This is Hardcore"

Its all a bit unexpected really , Young Americany vocals and lyrics/vocals that drift from the music and go somewhere else. It is interesting in parts (faint praise) but as an album it's , I dunno, a bit bland.

Was really unsure at first but it's a grower. I think it might be one of those that works better live - luckily I've got tickets to see them on tour (though they were ridiculously over-priced).
Enjoying This Is Hardcore at the moment for the first time in ages after the above comment.

And now a video.
