Better second half though, more pressure in midfield and great goals from Nabbout and Leckie....liked the way they didn't back off. Back two looked solid.

Raheem Sterling got his times mixed up, missed a flight and joined up with the England squad this morning instead of last night.

I thought the first half display yesterday was as good as I can recall for quite some time - very inventive and fluid and had Sterling not had an absolute fucking nightmare, we would probably have gone in at least 4 to the better.

The second half was more worrying in our failure to adapt to the change of formation from Nigeria. Whilst I think Southgate seemed a touch slow in doing anything about it, the emphasis should still be on the individual players inability to recognise and respond to the change . Both Trippier & Young had to engage higher up the pitch from that point on, but neither did.

I think we learnt a couple of things though - Young isn't good enough and most certainly not on the left hand side. We don't need both Dier & Henderson playing together. That triumvirate of Alli, Lingard & Sterling worked okay together, but I'd like to see Loftus-Cheek in Lingard's place for the next game.

Overall, 7.5/10.

Rose will start over Young, who I imagine is just backup.

The players look confident on the ball and in possession generally. Kane looks very sharp and I thought they rotated fluidly in the final third to good effect.

I don't think that they will score a lot, but defensively they look less likely to panic than in previous years.

From what I've read, he just hasn't impressed at international level. Brandt, Reus and Draxler have all done more to earn their places.

England showing some depth in their squad or will they flatter to deceive again?

I had baulked at Welbeck's inclusion but he does have a decent record for England..

COME ON THEN!

I'm going for a Spain vs France final, with the former edging it.

Germany are going to crash out to Brazil in the semis, with France beating them.

England will edge out of their group, but it'll be close. I can see them drawing with Tunisia in a lacklustre opening game, beating Panama 1-0 and getting a draw against Belgium. Not sure if they will make it past Poland or Colombia in normal time.

Based on my completely limited knowledge of national football these days:

I have Spain v Germany and Uruguay v Brazil in the other semi.

That might be France v Brazil but I have a feeling France will not get as far as they should thanks to their manager. I feel the same about Belgium who could be up against Brazil in the quarters. Of course both of these teams might really gel and go further in spite of their managers but I just don’t think either is savvy enough to get the best out of the players.

My quarters:

Uruguay versus France
Spain versus Argentina
Brazil versus Belgium
Germany versus Colombia

My round of 16:

Uruguay versus Portugal
Spain versus Egypt
France versus Croatia
Argentina versus Peru
Brazil versus Mexico
Germany versus Costa Rica
Belgium versus Senegal
Colombia versus England

I can see a Spain versus Brazil final with the former to win.

How is Germany going to lose to Brazil in the semis, but Brazil not make the final? :?

Spain have got more than enough quality to oversee an issue with the coach going to Real. Think Bobby Robson and Italia 90.

They have just sacked him. Two days before playing Portugal in their first game.

That's a potential meltdown... crazy.

I mean what sort of cunt conducts negotiations about his role after the World Cup, in the week leading up to the first game, doesn't inform the national FA and then announces it on the eve of the tournament? Bold move by the Spanish FA and one I totally agree with.

It could just be a catalyst for the players (who are plenty good enough) to take over - as per Robson 1990, allegedly- and just go and win the World Cup. They're certainly got all the required talent to do so.
