Number one is Virgin Prune's If I Die, second is SPK's Leichenschrei. I need access to RYM to check the rest.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

The Modernist wrote:The best album from 1982 hasn't been mentioned. It is of course the glorious Sulk by The Associates.
That record took me a few listens to really click, largely because it's so fussy and florid in its opening half. That's not a bad thing, it just means I have to sink into it, sometimes you could even describe it as sinister ("Bap de la Bap", "Nude Spoons") and Mackenzie makes some fascinating vocal choices, often going for full falsetto where others would merely choose tenor. Once you get over the overwrought aspects, it's a record that becomes more compelling as it goes along, with the joyous "Party Fears Two" and the defiant "Club Country" really taking it to another level. That said, I still don't understand why they bookended the record with those two instrumentals. It's a great wallow otherwise, there's something quite louche about it too.

It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

Club Country, such a good song. Vies with Don't Change as favourite song of the year.

Re: Your favorite albums of 1982
Gregory Isaac's Night Nurse is another great 1982 album. Sure, it's dominated by the intense, pleading title track, but there's a lot of good material throughout the record, whether it's the moody "Objection Overruled", the soothing "Cool Down the Place" and the easygoing Lovers' rock of "Sad To Know You're Leaving". The use of synthesizers is effortless too, they really blend into the overall playing, and if anything, give it a spacey rootsy feel that manages to tie the whole record together.

A pedant writes: Wasn't Violent Femmes released in 1983, not '82?
Anyway, the selection from the Cornish jury is:
LEXICON OF LOVE
Forever Now
Avalon
Upstairs at Eric's
Thriller
A Broken Frame
Pornography
Night & Day
I want to say The Dreaming, but I've always struggled to love it, exc for the title track.
