Let’s just say it how it is/was:
Debbie Harry was gorgeous.
Patti Smith was a munter.

Ah yeah, I suppose. I like some of those songs, too. Maybe she could go in the list above.

Yep.
Some people go for that 'androgynous' look she had around the time of Horses, but it doesn't do much for me. Looks are of course important in what they do. Even Davey has to admit that.
Patti didn't have as many good songs as Debs, either. And there's that weird, affected vocal. Costello does a similar thing. Horrible.

There’s a lot of bullshit around Patti Smith. All that rock ‘n’ roll poet nonsense is bogus and tiresome. She’s become some kind of totem for authenticity and literate rock ‘n’ roll which is naturally the kind of thing I rail against in disgust but, on Horses at least, she had a real lightning in a bottle moment. I can dismiss a lot of what came after but that record deserves the hype. She’s “woke” too of course, all that People Have The Power nonsense is tedious but has probably helped her cross over to younger generations.
Blondie didn’t have a statement of Horses magnitude but they constantly entertained and had some really great singles that sound wonderful and evergreen. Harry was a big part of their charm and I don’t just mean in the obvious way. She brought something to those records and, admittedly, there is something utterly perfect about her. I have female friends who describe her as a “goddess” and she’s one of those rare singers who seems to appeal to men and women equally, but for different reasons of course.
If you were to put together a best off Blondie’s would beat Patti’s quite handily.

Diana Ross
Ian Curtis
Carole King
Randy Newman
Johnny Thunders
Todd Rundgren - in small doses

Yeah. Ok.
Billy Fury
Alan Vega
Sky Saxon
Aretha Franklin
Fats Domino
I don't dislike but am not really very interested in
Roky Erickson

Kevin Ayers
No, ta
Annie Lennox - though oddly there are a few Eurythmics and Tourists tunes I rather like.
Bob Mould
Fuck off
Ginger Baker
I've not knowingly ever heard a note by James Murphy or Lydia Lunch

Patti's pop sensibility appeared more on Easter and Wave.
I like them better than Horses.
They are both way less up their own arses.
But Blondie kick her arse all the way back to the Bowery.

Anyone want to take a punt in telling me how we arrived at Patti v Debbie?
Where is, oh I dunno, Roger v Ray?
Where is Patti v Roger, come to think of it?

Re: rank these artists II
Machuki talked trash about Deb.
Hatz gave Patti as an example of a peer who he (rightly) feels has more 'cred' but less 'charm'
Are we not allowed to get tangential now?

I'm a big fan of getting tangential.
I'm less interested in the pitching of "a peer" couple of women into 'munter's v' the women who make my cock hard.'

It's not quite that simple or basic, really though.
Blondie were appealing, across a really broad demographic. Of course, Debbie was gorgeous, but the attraction was based on style, personality, and FUN!
Patti Smith never seemed like fun. She seemed like a difficult dinner part guest.

I thought we were simply discussing who was a better singer.

Re: rank these artists II
The discussion about Smith vs. Harry was about which was a better singer.
If we take in their whole artistry, Smith just passes Harry up by more. Despite what’s been claimed here, Blondie aren’t even that much fun.

In your opinion.
And - by pretty much any measure - she was more fun than Patti.
