Scariest or most chilling scene in a movie?
I was recently reminded of the scene in The Omen where the nanny gleefully hangs herself publicly. That's got to be one. What are some others?

Re: Scariest or most chilling scene in a movie?
My friends and I saw Freaks and Night of the Living Dead in a double feature back in in 197? and they were both more scared by NOTLD but I was more scared by Freaks. Maybe disturbed is a better word.
I agree, it's not that the freaks are bad, but when the expected order of things changes, it scares us. When children rise up or have unexpected power (see my OP), when insects revolt (Phase IV), and so on.

One of them might be Rutger Hauer saying "Disneyland "

Might not work out of the context of the film, but as creepy child actors go, this is remarkable performance. Really eerie.

The end of Carrie was pretty scary.

That's a film with many chilling scenes but as you say, they may not work out of context of the movie.

Yes! Wonderful. Wyngarde's face appearing out of the darkness! The eerie glide, the heavy breathing!
Beautiful stuff.
Some personal favourites:
Donald Sutherland's scream at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
The end of Seconds
The end of The Vanishing.
Donald Sutherland's daughter drowning in Don't Look Now.
The ending of Kill List

I'm not a horror movie fan, they don't do aught for me, never have, so I'm going on another slant at most chilling and scary from Cabaret.
Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

Re: Scariest or most chilling scene in a movie?
I saw Mario Bava's "Black Sabbath" when I was milk & cookie aged. the first of the three segments is called "a drop of water".
I can't find the scene that sticks with me -- when the nurse first takes the dead woman's ring. I've posted the only scene I can find -- her final comeuppance.
I'll grant you that it's pretty old fashioned but, even though I've graduated to beer & pretzels, Mario Bava still really gets under my skin.

One scene I remember getting me in the shrink-to-the-corner-of-the-sofa, edge-around-the-walls-when-leaving-the-room-after, hands-to-teeth-and-wibbling way was in Ringu when the girl climbs out the fucking TV

I've seen lots of silly horrors with rubbish endings, but that is in the top 10 silly endings for me.
