Cummings is a technically gifted singer, though I prefer Hunter. Lynott didn't sing, he drawled the lyrics, apparently some folk like that.

Too much swagger sometimes, if you ask me. Too much Mick Ralphs. Too many ordinary songs ("Violence," "I Wish I Was Your Mother") claimed as classics by people who should know better.

Amazing heights, undeniably, but I think that pop glam stuff has caused people to see things that aren't there. Not that I'm saying anything I haven't said here ad infinitum over the years.

And I haven't even started on how bad their version of "Sweet Jane" is. And it's one of the songs their reputation is based on!

Of course it is.

Maria McKee covered it, too.

The love of Thin Lizzy has always been one of those odd BCB quirks.

Hunter sang on some genuinely great glam pop songs, two of which at least (Dudes and Stone) are absolutely wonderful

Stodgy 70s rock, innit? always a hit around here.

Yomp'll be along any minute to tell us Lynott was a genius or something.

Stodgy 70s rock describes a great majority of Mott.

I was thinking the same thing. You can use "glam" as an adjective all you want, but it doesn't really change the music.

When they're good, though ("All the Way From Memphis," "...Dudes," "Death May Be Your Santa Claus," etc.), they're truly great.

There's a dozen at a stretch, though. And that's out of what, ten albums?

I like All the Way from Memphis, but even that is pretty basic boogie rock.

Apart from 5 or 6 hit singles they made dreary unimaginitive formulaic meat and potatoes rock.
They were the Ocean Colour Scene of the 1970s.

Yeah, but you could say that about 99% of bands we rave about here.

One of the things that (I think) makes Mott a cut above the rest is that they managed this kind of irresistible groovy shit in the early days:

and then you get triumphs like this a few years later:

and if Lynott and his glum little entourage have anything that even approaches the sheer exuberance and primary-colours BIG TIME FUN that this beaut offers, I'd LOVE to hear it:

Ear of the beholder. "Rock and Roll Queen" has always seemed pretty typical, dull and cliche. Like something written by somebody that ended up in Bad Company, kind of.

"Jerkin' Crocus" is pretty damned standard-issue boogie too. "Roll Away the Stone" is their good side, but again- exception rather than rule.

Lynott was a more "detached" writer, I suppose, but he's a first class dramatist, which is hard to do in song. I'm not sure Hunter ever managed it. To me stuff like "Violence" is an unsuccessful version of what Lynott does well.

Those are very good points, although I don't know exactly what you mean by detached.

For example, in Romeo & the Lonely Girl, the song's protagonist is a scummy lothario. By the end of the song, you really feel sorry for him despite his character flaws.

I don't know if you feel that way if Lynott himself doesn't empathize with his own subject.
