Someone PM Copehead, there’s a straw man being erected!
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I think YOU are dull and grey.
Both of the tracks you mentioned are sonically amazing records (especially “Power to the People”). Neither of them is dumb. They may be dated and they may feel naive. But turning “hell on wheels” into “Helen Wheels” is flat out dumb. Anyone past the age of 7 would have to feel a little embarrassed if they were asked to defend that as a song idea. It gets by because of the sound of the record and his performance. But it is stupid at it’s core. There’s nothing there, which is fine...there doesn’t HAVE TO be. But let’s not get over our skis in proclaiming greatness for it.
Again - I have zero issues with anyone preferring Paul’s 70s sonic profile to John’s. It is perfectly valid (and really...it’s the only consistent virtue Paul’s music had in that period). But let’s not shortchange the singularity of John’s sonic landscape during that time. There’s really nothing like it. You can’t simply ascribe it to Spector, as even the stuff John did without him had it AND none of Spector’s records with anyone else sounded quite like his work with John.
More than 40 years after the fact, nothing in rock by anyone else has really sounded quite like 70’s Lennon. Paul’s 70s records were beautiful sounding, but to a certain extent they all sounded like they sprung forth from Abbey Road (with a bit of Let It Be’s off-the-cuff-ness tossed in). John’s records were a complete departure from the Beatles. He created his own sound.
None of that is to say that it was a better sound than what Paul was doing. But it deserves to be respected.

Great sounding full on stooooopid rock n roll songs like Magneto and Titanium Man or Helen Wheels or Juniors Farm tend to also be a lot of fun. I believe there's a quote somewhere where McCartney says he found them the hardest to write.

Well it's good to see we're doing to stick to talking about the post.

Both tracks sound like utter shit, recorded on a late 60' cassette player, by a student at the bottom of a well. A well half fell of water. Three miles from the instruments.
And the lyrical sloganeering bullshit is far, far more embarrassing than "Monkberry Moon Delight", for instance. Which is Macca having (open and obvious) fun - something you're not likely to accuse Lennon of on those two slabs of shite, are you?

Re: Wings/70s Paul poll
I'm on Davey's side here, btw. I'm probably more forgiving of the jock rock that Macca indulged in at times, and less of a fan of Double Fantasy, but I can't manage to put together ten songs from a similar era that come even close to equaling Shaved Fish. And no, it's not perfect. But everything on it is either great or nervy as hell. For all his "feel over skill" ethos he damn well knew how to make records. And for all Paul's superior ability, he sure half-assed it a lot of the time. Paul was better at polishing a turd, but he sure laid more of them out in the first place.
