Sadly nowadays they're all pushing up the daises.

Who was your favourite?

I'm not much interested in Nick Drake. He was a pansy.

I still don't have much of a sense of Arthur Lee, even after all these years. He was enigmatic. He's responsible for some incredible music but I think some of it was as much the work of the other fellas - Bryan MacLean especially.

So my vote goes to Syd, for those incredible early PF singles especially.

OK

His music, as it was mostly little more than unadorned acoustic guitar, lacked the power of his psychedelic peers and tended to the whimsical. His vocals were fey and unengaging, and he had a limited range.

He was a puff

Oh my God, what is wrong with you?? He sang beautifully! Just listen to River Man and Hazey Jane I.

John is not interested in beauty.

I voted Sydney, but it's pretty close. There are some meh early Floyd singles, and Nick had very few songs I don't like a great deal. But it really IS better to burn out then to fade away, I guess, since I downgrade AL for doing little of interest for 30 years.

I proudly voted Nick Drake. I agree with John on Arthur Lee, but feel Syd was the same.

Nick Drake seemed more talented as the other two, but I might like most of their music better.

Nick Drake is pretty damn consistently excellent though where the other two have their ups and downs.

You don't have to be interested in beauty, but if you don't recognize the guitar playing on Drake's stuff, you're deaf.

That's the first thing I noticed, way before the songwriting or the singing, and I'm not alone. Joe Boyd, in his autobiography, points to Drake as the greatest guitarist he worked with. This is the guy who recorded all that stuff with Fairport Convention.

As a solo guitarist, Drake goes places no one else can get to.

This pretty much. Drake was interesting musically, but I am just more interested in bands and band sounds. If it were just Syd solo albums, Nick Drake, and some mythical Arthur acoustic, I might vote Drake then.

In terms of these people as performers, I probably would vote for Arthur's singing over anything Nick or Syd sang or played. Arthur is very close to my favorite vocalist.

Hallelujah. I thought I was alone on this board in my feelings about this guy. Someone else finds his desperately precious, oh-too-fragile, mummy-my-teddy's-stopped-breathing Fotherington-Thomas persona unpalatable. Sure he could play guitar, but so can lots of people, and if all you do with it is maximize your mimsiness, it's a bit of a waste, isn't it?

Oh, and Arthur over Syd, close call.
