Beyonce at Coachella

Postby Goat Boy » 15 Apr 2018, 16:25

People are losing their shit over this. I mean have a read of this...

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/apr/15/beyonce-at-coachella-review-greatest-star-of-her-generation-writes-herself-into-history#comment-114744543

Anybody watch it?

I'm pro-Beyonce even if I think she's much greater as a performer than on record but...

That vid reminds me of Super Bowl performances at halftime.

I really dislike those vocal gymnastic moments. She's a bit of a cheeseball, isn't she?

She's better when she's just trying to make people dance. I like the Busby Berkeley vibe

I hope it’s all medleys and aerobics.

Yes, as for all pop concerts, a material difference being that she doesn't say "now go and kill all the jews".

Well, it's that thing that so many younger artists today do for their concerts. Everything has to be bigger and better in order to appeal to the low attention spans of their audiences. It's not enough to just go out and do the material, you have to present it with a huge, show-biz spectacle of bombast and chutzpah with a gazillion dancers and fireworks.

I can't see what all the fuss is about, really -

press coverage in Holland is no different. IMHO there just isn't real creative and (forgive me the word) innovative pop around these days. My take on this is that our social fabric (the connective tissue) has been successfully attacked for three to four decades by now (depending on where you live). As a result, the political situation has become extremely dangerous. As another result, people seek refuge in predicable and rather empty show gestures, in pomp en circumstance, and in the use of the hyperbole.

People want there to be 'grand' pop and rock. Well, there is grand popular muzak; but it's certainly not great.

It's all about magical thinking and cognitive dissonance; if enough gullible folks and journalists intensely wish for something big, then that something big will occur - but only in the minds of the gullible.

The music of Beyoncé sounds much better than it actually is.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

It's interesting to me what people expect from a show like this and how these things change over time. You see it with Kendrick Lamar a bit as well. With Beyonce people project a lot onto her too.

The wife and I went to see her (back when she was still confined to one night at the intimate 23,500 capacity indoor arena here in town) in 2007. She was fucking amazing, frankly. Presence, pacing, repertoire, vocals, band, costuming, choreography, visuals - the whole damn thing. I can't even imagine how dinky that show seems now that the "cheap seats" at which she is aiming are further and further from the stage. If you've got the "it" to pull things off on this scale (be you Madonna, Iron Maiden, or Pink Floyd), I'm 100% all for it.

Long may she run.

I also think it distracts from the ability to put on a live, live show.
