Songs without rhyme....

Postby Diamond Dog » 15 Apr 2018, 12:41

I've been listening to quite a bit of Sinatra and have kind of got fixated around "Moonlight In Vermont" (written by John Blackburn and Karl Suessdorf ), from his 1958 album "Come Fly With Me":

There's something glorious about the imagery, and all without a single rhyme :

Pennies in a stream
Falling leaves a sycamore
Moonlight in vermont

I see finger waves
Ski trails on a mountain side
Snowlight in Vermont

Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway
And travel each bend in the road
People who meet, in this romantic setting
Are so hypnotized by the lovely

Evening summer breeze
Warbling of the meadowlark
Moonlight in Vermont

And it's all in haiku too!

Here's a fabulous page about the song, which really goes into depth...

"America" Simon & Garfunkel...

Let us be lovers, we'll marry our fortunes together
I've got some real estate here in my bag
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner's pies
And we walked off to look for America

Cathy, I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
Michigan seems like a dream to me now
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America

Laughing on the bus, playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said, be careful, his bowtie is really a camera

Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat
We smoked the last one an hour ago
So I looked at the scenery
She read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field

Cathy, I'm lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping
And I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come to look for America
All come to look for America

I believe when they found the body of General George A. Custer
Quilled like a porcupine with Indian arrows
He didn't die with any honor, any dignity, or any valor.

I believe when they found George A. Custer
An American general, patriot, and Indian-fighter
He died with shit in his pants.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Very hard to write like that I would think.

The lyric needs to supported by a memorable melody.

A Thing Made Well by The Mutton Birds

She's wearing her don't talk to me face
As she makes the kids lunches
I oblige and quietly shut the front door as I leave
I drive into town before the fog lifts
I sell sporting goods
'Cause I've got a shop not far from Cathedral Square

I like to open up early
So fellas can come in on their way to work
And daydream around the rods and reels
While their breakfast's still warm inside them
Go on have yourselves a look
I'm proud of my shop
Almost everything's from overseas
You won't find a better selection

Look at the way this gun fits the crook of your arm
To make a thing like that you'd need to know what you were about
You'd need to know where you were going
And go there in a straight line
And everything else you'd have to shut right out
Can you see the man who made that
Can you see him putting it down and standing back
Can you see the moment when he said
That's it
That's perfect

At a time like that
You wouldn't care about your job
Or your mortgage
Or the fight you had with your wife 'cause
When a man holds a thing well made
When a man holds a thing well made
There's connection
There's completeness
When a man holds a thing well made
When a man holds a thing well made
When a man holds a thing well made
When a man holds a thing well made

It's Wednesday
So I do the mail orders
There's nothing much
Some oilskins and a 303
For a hunter over in Westland
And oh yeah
One of those AK-47s
For some collector down the line

I would have thought it would be easier when you're not forced to work with rhyming words.

Do most rock songs feature lyrics with rhyme, then?

Sixteen and time to pay off.
I got this job in a piss factory inspecting pipe.
Forty hours, thirty-six dollars a week,
But it's a paycheck, Jack.
It's so hot in here, hot like Sahara
You could faint in the heat,
But these bitches are just too lame to understand
Too goddamned grateful to get this job
To know they're getting screwed up the ass.
All these women they got no teeth or gum or cranium
And the way they suck hot sausage...
But me well I wasn't sayin' too much neither.
I was moral school girl hard-working asshole
I figured I was speedo motorcycle
I had to earn my dough, had to earn my dough
But no you gotta, you gotta relate, babe,
You gotta find the rhythm within.
Floor boss slides up to me and he says
"Hey sister, you just movin' too fast,
You screwin' up the quota,
You doin' your piece work too fast.
Now you get off your mustang, sally,
You ain't goin' nowhere, you ain't goin' nowhere."
I lay back. I get my nerve up. I take a swig of Romilar
And walk up to hot shit Dot Hook and I say
"Hey, hey sister it don't matter whether I do labor fast or slow,
There's always more labor after."
She's real Catholic, see. She fingers her cross and she says
"There's one reason. There's one reason.
You do it my way, or I push your face in.
We knee you in the john if you don't get off your, get off your mustang, Sally,
If you don't shake it up baby."
"Shake it up, baby. Twist & shout"
Oh that I could will a radio here. James Brown singing
"I Lost Someone" or the Jesters and the Paragons
And Georgie Woods, the guy with the goods, and Guided Missiles ...
But no, I got nothin', no diversion, no window,
Nothing here but a porthole in the plaster, in the plaster,
Where I look down, look at sweet Theresa's convent
All those nurses, all those nuns scattin' 'round
With their bloom hoods like cats in mourning.
Oh to me they, you know, to me they look pretty damn free down there
Down there not having crystal smooth
Not having to smooth those hands against hot steel
Not having to worry about the [inspeed] the dogma the [inspeed] of labor.
They look pretty damn free down there,
And the way they smell, the way they smell,
And here I gotta be up here smellin' Dot Hook's midwife sweat:
I would rather smell the way boys smell--
Oh those schoolboys, the way their legs flap under the desks in study hall
That odor rising, roses and ammonia,
And way their dicks droop like lilacs
Or the way they smell, that forbidden acrid smell,
But no I got, I got pink clammy lady in my nostril
Her against the wheel, me against the wheel
Oh, slow motion inspection is drivin' me insane
In steel next to Dot Hook -- oh we may look the same--
Shoulder to shoulder, sweatin', 110 degrees
But I will never faint, I will never faint.
They laugh and they expect me to faint but I will never faint
I refuse to lose, I refuse to fall down
Because you see it's the monotony that's got to me
Every afternoon like the last one
Every afternoon like a rerun next to Dot Hook
And yeah we look the same
Both pumpin' steel, both sweatin'
But you know she got nothin' to hide,
And I got something to hide here called desire
I got something to hide here called desire
And I WILL get out of here--
You know the fiery potion is just about to come
In my nose is the taste of sugar
And I got nothin' to hide here save desire
And I'm gonna go, I'm gonna get out of here
I'm gonna get out of here, I'm gonna get on that train,
I'm gonna go on that train and go to New York City
I'm gonna be somebody, I'm gonna get on that train, go to New York City,
I'm gonna be so bad, I'm gonna be a big star,
and I will never return,
Never return, no, never return, to burn out in this piss factory
And I will travel light.
Oh, watch me now.

Not strictly speaking a song, I guess, but by gob a fine piece of rock & roll writing
In timeless moments we live forever

You can't play a tune on an absolute

Negative Capability...when a man is capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact & reason”

More of a challenge is something I would love to hear more of, hip-hop without rhyme. I get sick of hearing the same vocal pattern, the same rhythms, the same old doggerel. I mean, I get sick of simplistic rhyming in rock, pop, whatever, too, but it's a curse in hip-hop.

So have some Sole & The Skyrider Band

Whoever bellows the loudest the victor
Who ain't bucking shots at they shadows already fallen
When the time comes it'll be to my surprise
We smashed the clocks and joined the flocks just to watch doves gunned down from above
And you want it all, ideal wrapped in plastic
Fresh air comes free with it
Make sure that the alkaline levels are permanent
Drop us in, hold us to the flame
Tell us our new cities will be far cleaner than the old ones
And you the type to move to an island of birds and trees
When the birds are gone, you won't have enough wood to build a boat and sail home
So when they find you, and ask you what happened, its real simple
"Get rich or die trying."
Now I'm back in the swing of things
Like strange fruit in their good old days in Georgia
Like gypsies with baseball bats that beat us to a pulp, I see it now
And they can say rapping won't change anything...
Its not my fault words and morals hollowed out
And if we live "we live to thread on kings", and if we die we die only lonely and forgotten
If I ever make it to heaven, I hope they have a wireless connection
Where have I been?
In the bathtub reading Harper's
Things got much worse, but I'm chilling...
To cool to draw blood over life and it trivialities
I'll watch the Earth crack open, you'll fall in
Running around in purgatory looking for batteries
When the last buzzard eats the last candy bar from the last body on the San Andreas...
It'll be a sad day for investors

I'm of the Earth, like methane and sulfuric acid I can't trespass
Universal like radiation and freezing in the cosmos
Older than I feel, and easy going like anvils
Easy going like anvils that crush us while dancing
Pity me and American city
With high rent and neighbors that always bitch at the volume
No one understands, and if they understand they understand too well
Its a toss up, walk free to the finish, or flog up and down the gauntlet
Some day I'll make a fine president
I can tell by the way they throw stones
I can tell by the way I struggle for words, and the way the cookie crumbles before they get to eat
They say they care, but it's clear they don't
They say there's nothing to fear, but I know better
Running from obscurity and shoveling shit
On some heavy drugs, in some heavy book
The sky too, heavy, like crystallized smog
Cutting up my lungs and wishing I was dead, but I can't die yet
All my dents are in the dust
And I'm still punished by virtues I worked so hard to shed
My wife and my dogs is all I have
What you wanna take from me, my credit card debt?
Let the chips fall and crash the soles of our feet

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

"Case Of You" Joni Mitchell :

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star and I said,
Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar
On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling and I would
Still be on my feet
Oh I would still be on my feet
Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid
I remember that time that you told me, you said
"Love is touching souls"
Surely you touched mine 'cause
Part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter
And so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours, she knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds and she said
"Go to him
stay with him if you can
But be prepared to bleed"
Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
You're so bitter
bitter and so sweet oh
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I would still be on my feet
