It was obviously a misjudged attempt at humour that should have stayed between him and his girlfriend. It is initially the sort of thing that two people could share and find amusing if both know that the other is anything but racist. But he took it over the line with the "gas the Jews bit" and he did something moronic when he posted it for others to see.

But prosecuting someone for making a joke in poor taste is stupid it just plays to the victim mentality of the right

The thing is, Jimmy Carr can be genuinely offensive, and doesn't try to dress it up in a shit veil of irony, like Ricky Gervais. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but he's honest about it, and is generally trying to be in bad taste, than actually support or further the causes of stupidity and bigotry like your Jim Davidsons. In that clip you've posted, he even tries to explain the basic mechanics of the joke, and the moral ambiguity. I'd say there's a big difference between choosing a ridiculously bad taste subject as the point of the metaphor to emphasise a pun, and saying "Gas the Jews" repeatedly, even with a dog there to make it so hilarious.

As an aside, I have seen Jimmy Carr live, and I didn't really rate him as a stand-up, there's no real connection between him and the audience, and he's clearly reciting a pre-defined list of one-liners, rather than moving with or manipulating the ebbs and flows of the audience mood.

I like him and do find him funny. Some of the jokes I struggle with, I have to admit. When he wants to be he can be quite clever without being over controversial.
