Part Two
Today, from 1982, Brighton and West Wight

Image
The Camel Lamp
This lamp, apparently made from a camel bladder or two, was a fixture in Billy's homes in the 1980s, a legacy of his
father's diplomatic career, IIRC. I inherited it when he moved in with Flo, and it featured in the trip room in Oldland
for many years.

Image
Hearth

And now a trip to the Isle of Wight that I can date exactly to mid-May 1982, as it culminated with me watching
Alex Higgins win the world snooker championship on TV from the confines of a very comfy chair in what was
Alfred Lord Tennyson's study. I hadn't been to the island since the early 1960s with my parents. I've never located
nor scanned in the photos of the first couple of days, but I took these on the third day, the 16th. I was sick and
hungover (that's how long ago all this was) and determined to get outside despite a thick sea mist ( I was staying
in Tennyson's former house, now a hotel, on the Freshwater Downs)

Image
Pastel Palette
Note to non-Brits: the sandstone cliffs at Alum Bay are famous for their multi-coloured sands, often made into tourist souvenirs such as the one below (not my pic, obvs). Here they are in situ
Image

Image
The Needles Light
By the time I had climbed down into the Bay itself, the last boat trip around the bay was gone, but the guys took me
round to Freshwater harbour, where they were mooring for the night. This pic of the Needles rocks and lighthouse is
the only one I have of this boat trip as I was conserving film. The odd effect in the sky is caused by removing blemishes
from the scan and rather forcing the image: because I was shooting directly into the sun and sea I had everything
stopped down as far as it could go, and managed to underexpose it. It's a might-have-been.

Mart and Plang
I knew Mart from Aberystwyth (although he was originally from Merthyr). When he moved to Brighton, I supplied him
with dope. Plang (P Langley Esq) was his housemate - no idea how they met, but it was Plang who introduced me to
Howard, who had been a fellow student at Warwick, was a fan of Spurs, music and hashish, and lived just two or three
miles from me in London. Haven't seen Plang in 30 years, but Howard is a mate today, and indeed a BCBer, kropotkin

Swingtime

Chip and I got together at the end of May. She had already agreed to spend part of her summer holidays (she was working as
a special needs teacher) with her mother in Dumfries, and together we hatched a plan to make the long drive up from London
(in her new Green 2CV, Kermit) by the very scenic route: we booked rooms in East Anglia and Yorkshire for three nights, and
then she dropped me at Carlisle to get the train back to London on the fourth day, as we weren't ready for me to meet the parent.

We left on August 14. I know because I have a diary. First day's destination was Salamanca Farm, near Norwich, but we weren't
in a hurry - at least not at first

In part one, the second instalment of Chip and Ray's exploration of Eastern England.
Part two features the first stirrings of spring in February this year, although it's difficult to believe that now with the snow swirling about...

First, a brief explanation: you all know me as a cool dude, hip to what's happening sound-wise, but I was once very
fond (still am to a lesser degree), of ecclesiastical art and architecture, and love bumbling about the country discovering it.

Mediaeval High Art

At this point we were racing to get to our booked digs near Norwich. From the diary:
"Stopped short of our destination at a pub called The Dun Cow. Frank Ifield on the jukebox, wall to wall pensioners, no
food: we left when a man took a seat nearby while carrying an amplified accordion"

The following day started better, though

The diary tells me I took loads of pics here, and I can remember them well, but they have not been scanned, at least
in this batch, apart from this one
