The Fleshtones vs. The Fuzztones

Postby Osgood » 07 Mar 2018, 09:14

Two garage rock revivalists from the 80s. Still fun to hear.

I suppose they were helpful at the time due to the scarcity of recordings by yer actual Nuggeters but once the reissues came out obsolescence beckoned. Garageband re-enactment society.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Fleshtones were the better band. Fuzztones, like a lot of 60's garage revivalists did little more than re-write three or four well-known "Nuggets" singles over and over.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I remember Mudhoney coming back from touring Holland & Germany in 1992, totally amazed at the number of people there with Rudi Protrudi haircuts. Meanwhile the Fuzztones could barely fill a 200 capacity club in LA. I only heard a few things & wasn't that impressed.

Fleshtones seemed like a high energy good time band with a sense of humor so I guess I choose them.

I can't imagine a world without the Fleshtones (or don't want to).

The Fleshtones are still a pretty swell little band. Last year I had a chance to catch up with Peter Zaremba for the first time in a great many years. It was brief but he’s a charming gentleman.

The Fuzztones were big in Madrid when I lived there. I never thought they were that great. A friend of mine was on one of their record covers, though. Of all the US garage bands that sojourned in Madrid the best were the Cynics.

An old friend of mine was mentioned in one of their songs.

Like around 1983, the Fleshtones played a lunchtime gig at my college's student union. Made me a believer.

I don't know how San Jose State booked them, but they had pretty good lunch time shows - I saw the Fleshtones, T-Bone Burnett with Mick Ronson as his guitarist and the Violent Femmes, among others at those shows.
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk!
