Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass giant, is another one that comes to mind. Still makes me stop every time I hear it.

Hearing Little Richard, Howlin' Wolf and Screamin' Jay Hawkins were all "holy shit!" moments for me.

More recently, i'm pretty the last time i pulled up and thought "whoa, great voice" was when i first heard Chris Cornell sing on Badmotorfinger. Hell of a rock vocalist.

Amy Winehouse for me too. I heard her first album Frank and thought... and here is the new Ella, at last.

You know what Charlie - I've never (knowingly) heard her.

I just went and checked her (incredibly short) career out... wow. Thank you!

Nick Cave cites her as a key influence. Remarkable voice and vocal style.

But don't hold that against her.

She was the one I immediately thought of.

Scott Walker too, especially from Nite Flights onwards.

He's not exactly a vocalist but the first time I heard Miles Davis's speaking voice was a scary moment.

I agree with Björk and Billy Mackenzie. Also, Nightwish's original singer Tarja Turunen really turned my head. Unbelievable voice in a metal context.

Agreed on Bjork and MacKenzie and simple admiration for Nightwish reference, no. 1703.

Some really good choices there and a fair few that resonate with me, but nothing and no one ever hit me like Howard Tate. Get it While You Can or Ain't Nobody Home are probably good sledgehammer starting points.

Diana Ross at the start of one of those 60s Supremes records. I forget which one.

Yeah. For the same reason, I'd cite Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, and Skip James.
