Sting after the Police

Postby Brickyard Jack » 09 Feb 2018, 21:31

So bring on the night is brilliant, nothing like the sun is largely brilliant, ten summoner's tales excellent and mercury falling pretty good.

What about the stuff after that? Any views? He gets a poor write up round here for his personality but are there any decent records after mercury falling?

As you say, the first two LPs are pretty good; a lot better than they're given credit for here. TST is okay and I never bothered exploring after that. Saw him twice and the Police once.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I saw him on the Amnesty tour in 1988, with the band that recorded bring on the night. It was tremendous. Though that whole gig was sensational.

The Last Ship is worth a hearing, especially the Becky Unthank track.

Coffee table book music.
I will admit he used good players and that his singing voice is nothing to sneeze at.
None of these albums actually cured cancer so I hold that as a point against them.

I’ve never quite understood why he’s so despised! I mean, I don’t particularly like the fella but the way some people talk it’s like he shat in their slippers!

He's easily confused with Bono?

It's perceived hubris.
He takes himself very very seriously

Unless he's just taking the piss.
Which I wouldn't rule out

Bono is much more fun.

oh yeah - I like the first album but have never bothered with the rest
I was a huge Police fan - I'd take them over the Jam and the rest of their more 'credible' contemporaries

Have you seen those Brian Johnson (AC/DC) shows? He interviews stars and shows way too much wide-eyed sycophancy.

Anyway he did one with Sting and he (Sting) really does come across as a stuffy humourless prick.

Mind you Johnson's a fuckin eejit so it's not like you can take sides.

don't be ridiculous. what on earth is there to say about his records, even with the Police.

The man is and always has been an utter cunt.

I can only agree with the bear here.

Ah well if you two say that it means they are pretty good and I had better get the whole set.

This.

I have heard so much better music on the margins of popularity … Wait, imagine you didn't know who Sting was and found one of his albums in a bin and for a penny you took a punt. An undiscovered genius?!? I think not. But his albums sold millions. Just goes to show ya, shit ain't fair.

Hang me now, but I really like those first two albums.

Funny that Russians is still as relevant now as it was then.

I love the production and playing on these albums and Sting’s songs are strong throughout.

I think throughout his solo career he has wanted to be seen as the English Paul Simon. It’s not surprising that they went out on tour together.
