Well I'm not sure they took themselves seriously which in my eyes made them more open to ideas and made them a legendary band.

What era you talking about anyway? I'm assuming your talking about their humor and early 70's albums general silliness. However, mixed in was fantastic musicians, great jams and excellent meditative music. LAter they got extremely serious when Pierre took over the band and turned them into a fusion band and at the same time Daevid brought in a semi punk attitude to his Gong band. Gong were always changing and loved it all. Plus the multiple bands that are part of the Gong family.

Hell in 2006 I jumped on a plane to Amsterdam for this

Can we take Gong more seriously than bands that took themselves too seriously?

Yes.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Bill Bruford seemed to think they were a bit of a joke, in his memoir.

I think the problem was just that he didn't get it.

Funny critics always pick on bands that are too serious (mostly prog band BS) and not having fun and now we get the comment that silly is not good either? Personally I prefer this to the BS punk bands get praised for.
