Imitation of Life was their last high spot.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

It's a silly lyric, and I certainly take no pleasure in watching him move awkwardly, but (particularly by REM standards) it's very hummable.

I surprise myself by voting 'hit.'

Hmm. At least we are spared the experience of looking at Stipe’s great, quivering, mis-shapen Head!

Yeah, it's REM on autopilot, like a chef working with ingredients that have long gone stale.
Miss.

It's ok, the chorus in particular. Like an old blanket which still holds some warmth.

'Accelerate' and 'Collapse into Now' have songs far better than "Imitation of Life" (and "The Great Beyond"...a perfectly passable REM tune)....

Its alright - clearly not prime REM but decent enough and better than a lot of the bland mulch they produced as a trio (who knew it was Bill Berry that kept it together for them?).

Voted hit as its not shit...

I liked it then hated it and now I like it again. It's.....sweet

I understand the criticism of the lyrics. Oasis used to always get 'the words are shit', but REM got 'enigmatic'. It's all the same bollocks really.

Surprising, sometimes, how these fellas can hoodwink us.

Beautiful song, love the absolute shit out of it. Is it nostalgia for being 17 again? Probably contributes to it, but I still belt it out pretty decently when I hear it.

Chorus is good, verse is a bit of a plod, and the two feel somewhat clumsily jammed together.
I feel much the same way about "Man on the Moon" in fact, but I prefer this one.
