The charm of Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast

Postby trans-chigley express » 08 Jan 2018, 13:16

I know this is considered a bit of a throwaway filler to pad out Atom Heart Mother, but I find the three sunny instrumentals that make up this lenghty track extremely charming to the extent that I went to the trouble of isolating them from the breakfast sound effects that make up most of the track and inlcuded them as part of a pre-Dark Side of the Moon playlist.

Although it's credited as a band composition it sounds like it was mainly composed by Gilmour and Wright with Wright's piano and hammond dominating the first one "Rise and Shine" and Gilmour performing the middle one "Sunny Side Up" solo. Only the final one "Morning Glory" features the whole band, but again it's basically built around Wright's piano with some nice guitar from Gilmour.

Any other fans of this minor Floyd track or is really just a load of tosh to finish off that album that needed one last track?

I love ALL of AHM - breakfast sounds and all - bar If, which I think is horrible in every way imaginable

I like it a lot. It's got some lovely whimsical and psychedelic elements to it, and the final section sounds really warm and uplifting.

Three lovely jams of prime Pink Floyd: beautiful music.

And I don’t even like marmalade!

It's one of my favourites too. The sound effects are as crisp as bacon sizzling in a pan. The doddering fool around is a character indeed. The music is pretty innocuous in itself but I like the scene it creates, a sort of inner city pastoralia.

I'm surprised you have such an aversion to it. I think it's the weakest thing on the album but I don't hate it.

I don't mind the breakfast sounds myself I only edited Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast for the purposes of having the instrumentals pop up on random play on my mp3 player as it's nice to hear them occasionally out of context of the whole thing.

...is mainly lost on me, but I must admit that I love that warm organ sound Rick contributes to that track and others on the album. Like drops of water.

Even by the standards of poor lyric writing it is appalling and Waters sings it horribly
The tune is a dreary old dirge and even Gilmour's half-hearted solo makes me want to break the disc.

That it is followed by Gilmour's and Wright's lovely little vignettes doesn't help its cause either

Yeah, the Gilmour and Wright tracks are great. I wish Wright had written more for Floyd, I think all his songs are always strong. His solo album was really disappointing though.

I agree re: If. I really hate that song.

After the beauty of Grantchester Meadows, If is just awful, cloying rubbish.

The rest of the album is fucking brilliant, particularly with the conclusion of ASB.

I like "APB" a lot too. In a way, since Nick Mason was the one who put the sound effects together -- I think they were recorded in his kitchen -- this fourth track is Nick's solo track, corresponding to the other three on the side, even though the music was surely written by Gilmour and Wright.

Did not know this
"Stanley Kubrick wanted to use the album's title track in A Clockwork Orange. The group refused permission, primarily because Kubrick was unsure of exactly which pieces of music he wanted and what he wished to do with them. In retrospect, Waters said "maybe it's just as well it wasn't used after all"

The music for Clockwork Orange was absolutely perfect, so yes, I agree that it's better the Floyd music wasn't used. The album did appear in the film though -- twice! ...

I dunno how many of you picked up the 1965 - 1972 box from a year or so ago, but there are 14 different versions of "Atom Heart Mother" on that box.
