ten from 1987's Festive 50

Postby naughty boy » 16 Dec 2017, 14:35

I remember the countdown quite well - a vintage year, for sure.

Many of these tunes thrilled me to my very core AND I'M NOT ASHAMED TO ADMIT IT.

Choose the three that mean the most to you.

In fact British indie/alternative music was in decline by 1987 from its earlier peaks. The post C86 years were a bit of a low.

Anyway I voted True Faith, Birthday, Rebel.. all a cut above the indie litter on the rest of the list. I did like Big Decision and April Skies at the time, and they sound okay/decent now.

True Faith, April Skies and Schizophrenia, in that order. In fact, True Faith (12" mix) might well be in an all-time top 10 tracks (if not, certainly in the 20)
The only one I dislike is Birthday

'True Faith' just sounds inept - dated in all the worst ways, and a chorus which promises to blow you away - and then just sits there like a bored techie eating a pork pie.

Not to me, JC, but Chacun à son gout terrible, and all that.

Quite, Ray. True Faith for me too, one of their finest melodic moments and that 12" is brilliant.
Tough to choose only 2 next to that... That I Ludicrous-track I remember hearing in a club and thinking that the DJ was the one gasbagging over the top of it.
OK, JAMC and Petrols next.

True Faith, Sonic Youth and, barely, JAMCMOR.

PE, TPE, Fall Group.

I liked all of the top ten at the time, but True Faith, Last Night..., and April Skies less than the rest.

I loved listening to and taping the Festive 50 shows.

Nice to see some pro-SY comments, as sparse as they are. They made a special noise sometimes.

They were wonderful in the 80s and the 00s, although I went off them a bit in the Geffen years. They and Yo La Tengo have, between them, the greatest body of work of any American band in the last 30-odd years, maybe ever, but they get such short shrift on here that I've mostly kept schtum about my love for both of them. Between them, they took the legacy of the VU and ran with it better than anyone else I'm familiar with.

I'll give Yo La Tengo one more try, then.

Which two songs, Ray?

BCB has made its position very clear on this and that should be respected and adhered to.
There'll be no revisionist championing of SY on my watch.

You can't sum up Yo la Tengo in two songs...They are definitely an album band...start with any album from this run:

Painful (1993)
Electr-O-Pura (1995)
I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (1997)
And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out (2000)
