It’s only moderately more defensible than arguing about which super bowl advertisement is “best.”

Sure, but it is all rather vulgar marketing.
Rubbish, it's an important part of it. Nothing "vulgar" about it.

this is a fair argument but I think maybe it makes OUR point better than yours. I mean, those things are designed to make you remember them. when you think back to Superbowls past, you might think of the chimp with the monkeywrench before you remember who won the game.

An important part of a pop record.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, we’re fetishizing mass-marketed product. I love it, and I’m ok with that. But it seems to make some uncomfortable.

THAT was what it was about??? like Baron, I assumed it was the likening of the stooges debut to diplodocuses floundering in the tar pits of La Brea.
It was just a flip way of saying that I couldn't be bothered to choose.
So here's a considered answer.
First, I come to like the covers of my favourite records best; they represent the good times I associate with the records.
Generally, though, as someone who has gradually come to self-identify as a photographer, I tend to look at record sleeves differently these days. Rather than getting into the semiotics of what's on the front of the sleeve, the attempt to present visually what the band is/was about – which is what I dismissed as 'marketing' – and to decode and find INFORMATION, I tend to look at them as images, as things worth looking at for their own sake. I never really liked that early Elektra house style on the Stooges and Doors albums; to me it was just a coloured-in version of With the Beatles. And I can't say I like it much now. The Ramones, nah, fine and stark but I want something richer on my wall. The same kind of applies to The Clash, and orange and green is taking the clash theme too far. And then there's purple Joe and his moobs on the Smiths, so I'm not enthusiastic about any of them as images. ather than disappear down the least-bad rabbit-hole, let's go back to the previous paragraph.
So the answer to your question in the original post is no.
Can I stay now?

The Doors it is, ever-so-slightly over the Stooges.
The Clash has the best cover, of course.
I like the Ramones debut a lot, but it's out of its league here.
I will spare you the usual anti-Smiths rant other than to say that it's the only one that is not under consideration at all.

Whether something is mass-market or been produced by a starving artist in a garret has never really concerned me. It's the visual appeal and power that interests me.

The Stooges photo is basically copying all those hard faced Stones photos really.

Exactly like a television advertisement!
Some are quite interesting on their own terms, you’ll have to admit!

I'm not even a massive Ramones fan, and I still think it takes this one easily.

This is a bit of high culture v low culture debate isn't it? I don''t think a piece of art has intrinsically more value for hanging on an art gallery wall than housing a record say. I mean these are old arguments..it's what pop art was challenging. Commercial art can be as great as classical art.

Not one bit.
But I’ve agreed with everything else you’ve said today, G.

And musically the Stooges and Iggy were supposedly influenced by the Doors and Jim Morrison.
A classic case of something terrible influencing something great.

Best sleeve is the Clash, I think, but dig the simplicity and iconic nature of the three American sleeves as well.

Clash USA VERSION
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
