Does 'a couple of steps' mean: all 40,075 km, around our globe?
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

No, but that the link has two or more steps, a la the Kevin Bacon game...

Did Charlie Chan Chow Hsuan ever have a hit with a title that translates as Grace?

Or release an album by that name?

"Grace" seems to me one of those words that the Chinese have 25 different expressions for.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

Ok. So Tim begat Jeff. Jeff had big hit with Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Cohen had "the gift of a golden voice" according to Tower Of Song. Chow was known as the Golden Voice.

Far-fetched but plausible! Because your line of reasoning can be verified.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

A brief sidetrack, sorry:

Frank's been a wonderful cultural resource for this sort of thing.

A while back I tried to watch something on YouTube about the making of Shocking Blue's At Home album. I gave up in frustration because - of course - everyone was speaking in Dutch, but I think maybe I'll try again and just try to translate it in my head:

Interviewer: "When you wrote 'Venus', did you know you had something special?"

Robbie van Leeuwen: "I did! As soon as I started playing that 'Pinball Wizard' intro I felt like I was onto something unique. By the time I put the Steppenwolf riff in, I was sure I had a hit. I felt it through my pee, as the saying goes."

Interviewer: "Still, it must have come as a shock when it was a hit around the world, even making #1 in America."

Robbie van Leeuwen: "This caused my trousers to drop spontaneously, as we Dutch persons are ever exclaiming."

Incredible and thank you! I feel that your ad hoc translation is as good as it can get.

"Daar zakt me de broek van af!" - yes, that's what we say when something extraordinarily and unexpected happens.

The real name of the Chinese star is Martin O'Gorman.

So.

Jeff sang in Gods and Monsters with Gary Lucas (formerly of the Magic Band) who recorded an album-length tribute to the legendary Shanghai chanteuses Bai Kwon and Chow Hsun.

Which as it happens is absolutely brilliant and warmly recommended by your correspondent.

So the son I don't particularly rate of a singer I don't particularly rate was in a band I've never heard of with somebody I've never heard of who recorded an album I've never heard of which was a tribute to somebody else I've never heard of. I was so close!
