Ariel Pink

Postby Goat Boy » 13 Nov 2017, 23:27

Was Before Today just a great one off?

The follow up didn't impress me. The other bits and pieces I've heard sound like somebody arsing about.

Has he done anything else remotely as good?

I read the article, which was nonsense.

I only own the aforementioned which I think is great, but, for whatever reason, didn't follow any further material. Strange, because usually I'm the opposite. Very close to entering it the best albums of 2000's as well.

I prefer Worn Copy to Before Today - I think it captured the whole "underwater 80s radio" thing better. I've not listened to anything that came after Better Today, come to think of it.

He is so frustrating. Enormous talent and imagination - really, quite special - and he wastes 75% of every album on skits, jokes and bad ideas.

A best-of would be phenomenal. Ten genuinely super songs:

Round and Round
Feels Like Heaven
Put Your Number in My Phone
Lipstick
Another Weekend
Only in My Dreams
Bright Lit Blue Skies
Fright Night (Nevermore)
Dazed Inn Daydreams
Mature Themes

Don’t really know the early stuff. It seems even messier!

He's a real arsehole as well, apparently.

I wonder whether he really has that much talent. I liked Before Today but even the best stuff off the last couple of albums is incredibly light and silly.

Oh, I think he has it for sure. There are hooks all over the place even in his most annoying misfires. He has a real old-school sensibility with unpredictable chord changes, clever bridges, middle eights that really take off, that kund of thing. He just seems unable to resist committing every stupid idea he has to record!

He's the kind of artist who could benefit from being around in a previous generation I think.

He needs more discipline and a filter. Perhaps a hard ass producer would help.

Shame because he has talent

He reminds me a lot of Todd Rundgren.
